Has anybody had any experience with the Aguila 117 grn. .45 ACP ammo that is being imported from Mexico? How did it perform?

HerbG, there have been a couple of threads on this topic already that you might be able to find with a search (if they haven't been eaten with the 3 April posts).

For a photo demonstrating the terrific muzzle flash of this round, e-mail me.

Hello. The high velocity, lightweight, but standard pressure Aguilla .45 ACP was reasonably accurate, but had one heck of a loud muzzle blast! It felt about like shooting a .38 Super from a 1911, ie pleasent. The hollowpoint round would feed OK in both a Kimber and a Les Baer that were both reliable with both standard ball, numerous standard pressure JHPs, and Plus P ammo. However, this stuff would result in the slide stops prematurely locking back in both of these 1911s. Shooting that bullet into mud at the range (not too scientific, huh?) showed that the bullet does split into three pieces. Groups at 25 yards are about 3" from either the Kimber or the Baer. Best.

117 grain .45?
Now - in smaller calibers I tend to favor the lighter and faster loads.
But this is too little mass for a .45.
I wouldnt go under 185 grains for anything - and would need a very good reason not to use 230 grain bullets.

I purchased and range tested this load in a 5 inch Kimber and a Colt Officer's ACP. While pleasent to shoot and relativly accurate the muzzle blast and blossom from the Officer's were something else! Had folks up and down the range checking to see what I was shooting. The fellow that sold me the ammo showed me some photos where he'd shot a side of beef. It left a fist sized hole about 4 inches deep. Remember there was no skin covering the meat, thus the results. I'll just keep using the Speer 185 grain gold dot in the Officer's and the Federal hydra-shoks in teh Kimber. Mark / FL

Check out the RBCD website at www.rbcd.net for some great info on similar rounds. This stuff is US made in San Antonio, Tx. If you guys aren't checking out this new ammo, you are missing something, especially if it is for self defense and are worried about overpenetration.

To help answer my own question, I purchased two boxes of the Aquila 117 grn. loads. They functioned perfectly in my Star Firestar P45. Recoil was about like ball ammo - perhaps a little sharper. At 50 ft. shooting offhand it would put five shots into one hole. It also blasted completely through a 2-1/2" pine sappling. In bright sunlight I wasn't able to judge muzzle flash. Impressive! I wouldn't hesitate to use the ammo for self defense.
