About a year ago, I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The many news stands along the main street sold post cards, with one of the most highly inventoried being that of Che. (It was that image many of you have probably seen...the one of Ernie in that beret that adorned so many college dorm rooms in the sixties.)
I asked one of the vendors why Ernie was still so popular down here.
"Oh, he is nothing to us. I sell that post card to Americans."
It seems it is the US that continues to romanticize not only Ernie, but Eva Peron (Evita) as well. To the people down there, this pair is a big zero.
Visiting a large cemetary in Buenos Aires, the resting place of Eva confirmed this. It was in the most dumpy corner of the cemetary: Broken crypt structure and trashy.
That movie a few years back that starred Madonna as Evita was a continuation of how idiots in the US make heroes out of myths.
