Age of a Hand-Me-Down

My grandfather gave me an old S&W .38 Snubbie a while back and I was curious as to just how old it actually is (as in, when it was manufactured). On S&W's website you can request a detailed firearm history but it costs $50 and I really didn't want to pay that much just to find out how old the gun is.

It's stainless steel and marked "Mod 60" on the inside where the cylinder locks in and the serial number on the bottom of the grip is "R85762." On the outside it's stamped "Smith and Wesson, Springfield Mass."

Anyone of you experts out there know when (or whenabout) this gun was made? I'm not concerned with collector value or anything, I actually plan on carrying it a bit. This is just out of curiosity.

Thanks for any and all knowledge!

I can't give you a date for your particular firearm but I can tell you that it was made no earlier than the mid-1960's. The Model 60 was introduced in 1965.

Someone else will probably have a more precise answer for your particular pistol.

Suggest yiou post SN with last three charaters...

X'ed out. Just to avoid poating the full s/n.

That's a hand me down to enjoy, the 60 has enough weight to dampen recoil nicely.

Suggest looking at the Pachmyar Professional Gripper grip, if you have large hands. They have a narrow width, but are longer axial and seem to fit my hands.

To really have fun, shoot a couple tables of bowling pins with it, with reloading by speedloaders and not looking at the cylinder.
