Aftermarket stocks for a better fit?

went out on the trap field for the second time this wkend w/ my 870 SM. and had a great time. shot a 14/25 which is ok i guess. shooting Win AA 7-1/2 lights.

im getting a lot better with the consistency of my shooting, etc. my problem is after two rounds my cheak is pretty sore.

at first i thought the comb needed to be raised. I took my 1/4" thick mousepad and stuck it between my cheak and the stock and that positioned my eye to look down on top of the barrel instead right down the barrel so i figured that the comb height was fine.

ive got a thin(~1/8") neoprene pad/shell holder on there now which helped a little as seen below:

could it be the way im mounting the gun(most likely the issue as i have had zero instruction)? ive got it tight in on my shoulder and my cheak tight on the comb, which seems like the correct way to do it.

my buddy who is also a beginner to the sport and to shotguns suggested that possibly i might need a stock with a longer LOP(870 has a 14" LOP as per remington.com). im 6'3, so maybe this is possible?

thanks for any advice, id really like to go out and shoot a couple rounds without having the sore cheak to prove it. :(

It's hard to diagnose a fit prob wiithout seeing you shoot. Any chance you can make it up to PGC Trap and Skeet this Friday? I'll be glad to work with you.

I'll have a couple 870s with me that have longer stocks.

went out this morning and met Dave at PGC Trap&Skeet. shot two rounds of trap and did really well.

Dave, thanks again for helping me out, your advice was very helpful and it shows. my score went up and my face doesnt hurt. we'll definately have to do this sometime soon. also, i think my dad is hooked.

ps. what was that other board you mentioned to me? cant seem to remember

Dan, you're quite welcome. TheHighRoad.org is where I hang my cyberhat mostly these days. See ya...

Lee, another believer. When you heading North?...

Like many self taught shooters, Dan was not behind his shotgun. Reworking his stance fixed the prob.

He could use a longer stock, but scoring 20/25 indicates he can work with the one he has for now.

I had an advisor once for trap that told me that once you are shooting 18-20 out of 25 you are fighting the mental game. Not to say that premium equipment won't provide some benefit; however, his point was that half the game is good shooting basics and equipment. The other 90% is mental.
