After removing cosmoline

I purchased a M19/30 Mosin Nagant about a week ago. I have removed the cosmoline from all the parts, I just have to coat the stock with tru-oil. Before I assemble all the parts back together, should the barrle, bolt, trigger, ect. be coated with some type of oil or solvent. Because I don't want any of the parts to rust.

Oh, and another question. Is it safe to remove the cosmoline in the bore with Mineral Spirits, Krud Kutter, or any other solvets?

Thank you. :)

Totally safe to remove the cosmoline - in fact you need to get it out. My personal favorite is ordinary non-chlorinated brake cleaner. Take the stock off and use it liberally. A blast of compressed air will help with getting it dry. Then, you must re-apply some type of lubricant/metal protector because the brake cleaner will strip it off down to the molecular level.

Make sure you clean the stock well otherwise the finish will not penetrate. I have used mineral spirits followed by Citrisol with good results. If there is lots of cosmoline in the barrel, you may want to try heating the barrel with a heat gun to loosen it up before running brushes, patches etc through it.

Mineral spirits is always your best friend when dealing with cosmoline.I stay away from brake cleaner as I believe it to be more dangerous and certainly more risky for the gun.Afterwards use normal dexron automatic transmission fluid as lube and rust inhibitor.

Doyle-thanks. Oh, and will compressed air help dry the stock faster?
DonP-thanks man. Those links were really great.
Dillon-yeah i have heard that Mineral Sprits is what everyone uses and it has given then great results. So im pretty sure I'm going to go with that
TeAnau-thanks, really appreciate it

I use Gun Scrubber... which is pretty much just brake cleaner. As for the stock.. put it in a black trash bag and leave it out in the sun for a few hours.

When using mineral spirits use some nitrile gloves to protect your hands.Vinyl/rubber gloves will simply turn to mush.

I don't think the compressed air helps it dry any faster. What it does do is remove any liquid that has accumulated in small recesses and corners.

HKFan9-Yeah that was what I had in mind. I was going to put my stock in a black/white trash bag and let the cosmoline melt. Once all of the cosmoline drips down (as much as it natually can) i planned on adding a think coat of Mineral Sprits, just to be sure that every last bit of cosmoline has been removed.

Te Anau-Oh, most definitely. Everyone has told me to wear some type of gloves when using Mineral Sprits.

Doyle-Oh okay. Well with that in mind, do you know any type of method that could help the stock dry faster. I was to refinish the stock A.S.A.P. so that I can take it to the rang lol.

My advice is to NOT rush the stock in any way. I have done it more than once and it will end in disappointment. Just take your time and get it right the first time. Good luck.

Not just any gloves,NITRILE gloves.Available by the vitamins and such at Sams club if you're a member.Plenty of other stores carry them as well.
