After 20 years, poaching neighbor finally got his....

For nearly 20 years we've had to put up with a neighborhood poacher. Drives around the area snipeing deer or anything that looks like a moving target. He's sneaky....authorities have been unable to catch him in the act. Has a garage full of racks that were taken out of season and with high power rifle (not legal here). He would routinely shoot a deer, not gut it, cut out the backstraps and antlers then leave the rest as coyote bait.

This past weekend he received his just rewards....got stopped for OWI, as the officer is making the arrest he pulls a handgun in his drunken stupor and waves it at the officer. Now he's facing multiple felony charges...won't be able to own a firearm, can't get a hunting license, or drive a vehicle. Only thing he'll be driving is a push lawnmower.

Somedays the sun just shines a little brighter....

Indeed it does. It's a wonder the game warden didn't center punch the idiot on the wishbone.

Glad he got busted, but honestly, do you think he

1) Won't drive anyway - people do it all the time with no license/suspended license
2) Won't get a gun - pretty easy to buy a gun from a private party, especially a hunting rifle.
3) Won't go back to poaching - he didn't care if he was legal before, don't think that changed

Did it slow him down, you bet. Was it good to get him arrested, you bet.

Did it change him to a fine, law-abiding citizen? IMHO - not a chance.

You beat me to the punch. All it did was slow him down for the time being. A dollar says within 6 months of "paying his debt" he'll be back to poaching.

And maybe if he's dumb enough to wave a pistol around if he's busted again, natural selection will take over.

Quite surprised he didn't get his ticket punched the FIRST time.

Glad to see that I am not the only cynical one!!

Don't get me wrong, I am very glad he got busted, but until he either keeps getting busted enough to finally get sent to "the big house", or, as pointed out, waves a pistol at the wrong person, it is very unlikely that he will change.

Some people do change. My bro was a meth-head in the 80's, pretty much lost the entire decade to drugs, but finally got it together. Now has a Master's in Special Ed and is a teacher, coach, and father. I never would have bet money he could come that far.

So I guess not everyone is hopeless, just an awful lot are...

Glad he got caught, but unless he gets locked behind bars, he will continue to be a low life. Some people never change.

He must have been very, very drunk or the officer showed an incredible amount of restraint or possibly both.

I bet 95% + plus of the LEO's, CCW holders and BG's who are regular posters on this site would have ended his poaching days for good.

That he got popped by the cop doesn't necessarily mean that its the end of his poaching. He'll probably keep a gun illegally, get an off road vehicle that doesn't require a license and still bag a buck. Some guys don't care about the law.

Wow, Seems odd that his neighbors knew this for 20 yrs and never turned him in. While I would be the last person in the world to turn someone one in for shooting his 90yr old dads' elk(assuming dad was in presence), I hesitate to think I could watch that go on for 20 yrs and not say anything to the game and fish.

Never said he hadn't been reported or turned in....they've known about him for years. Like most agency's they are short handed and had other priorities. This guy was very clever, they were unable to catch him in the act. As far as his poaching activities they still haven't got anything on him....this will certainly curtail his activity. The Feds weren't able to get Al Capone for all his crimes either....but they did stop him with an income tax conviction.

If I were a deer, I wouldn't be rejoicing just yet. Guys like this aren't concerned about the law or he wouldn't have been pulling this crap in the first place.

Ok, my apologies Rembrandt. I do understand how hard it is to build a case against some people, providing they are sneaky enough. Once again, I'm not the ratfink type but we as sportsmen cannot continue to overlook the losses we are continuing to get in our wildlife and hunting rights as well. If we allow it to happen then the the states will simply contract all of our wildlife licenses to the large landholders and outfitters. While I believe the afforementioned groups have their place and do many excellent things for our wildlife, we cannot give them control over our...repeat..mine and yours...wildlife. We state residents are the legal owners of said wildlife and noone else. That in and of itself gives us a duty to act when we see flagrant wildlife violations going on. I was standing in a store in Baggs, Wyoming while a local was trying to purchase the last10 over the counter additional antelope licenses the store had for distribution. The man was going to give the licenses to clients....rant,,,,rant,,,,I suggested to him and the clerk that I knew where the game warden lived and would be headed right there if this transaction took place...It didn't

No problem elkman06, still would like to see some game violations against this guy. Rock solid proof in court is difficult to get unless you have video of the act.....but this incident could work out much better in the long run. Hope he gets some jail time.

What Goes Around Comes Around!

We had a similar guy around here he market hunted for some very high class restaurants in Chicago.they had him on night vision video taking a yearling Doe Prime corn fed Iowa venison .they had an air tight case against him but the judge in his wisdom decided that he should be released with a fine and a promise to not do it any more(?)Just before Christmas he was spotted on 1 of the back roads that run through the corn fields around here.He took off and during the pursuit he lost control of his brand new F250 4x4 club cab super truck. He rolled it 4 or 5 times and being the kind of guy he WAS he wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejectcted on the 1st time over the 2nd time was on him(RIP)his blood alcohol was .023 and there were the carcases of 2 more deer.Like I said what goes around comes around ELMO:D

After "umpteen dozen" times of LET THE LAW HANDLE IT and them wringing their wee little meat hooks unable to handle the simplest of critters.... Well i don't snitch! i never was much fer snitchin' and after enuff "gimme" jobs dropped by LE I wouldn't snitch out a first degree murderer! We got gators here that are hungry! I also figger KARMA into the overall equation and if I don't want to be snitched out fer a simple tag light offense i better hold my mudd and handle it with the bugger himself...
A wanton poacher would have me so far up his butt he would retire in short order! I would be quick to pull along side (armed of course) and offer to help drag said poached mammal from the point of demise....;) them pro-poachers are a skittish bunch!

Wahoo hotdogs...I just didn't want to implicate myself just yet for this type of situation. Again, what happens within a family group(I have 80yr old parents on oxygen) is no concern of mine, I do however have extreme issue with outfitter types guaranteeing licenses being filled while the clients are drunk in the bunkhouse..

I agree that poaching is wrong and the way he did it was very bad. The rack means nothing to me. I do think there should be some places where a man can live a man’s life. I was a trapper and subsistence hunter. Not everyone should be forced to work for wages, or drive a car and live in a town.

Alaska is a good place to live if you can take the cold.

Charshooter, your point doesn't relate to the behavior written about in the opening post.

And a large percentage of poachers are nowhere near being subsistence hunters, for that matter. Think $$$$$.
