affordable semi-auto rifle

Why are semi-automatic rifles so expensive? I'm looking for one that meets the criteria:

1. at or under $600
2. at least 10 round magazine
3. .308 or similar ammunition
4. light enough to carry around
5. I want to buy new, not used.

If you go with the Saiga 7.62x39 it is quite a bit cheaper then the .308/7.62x51.

I bought a .308 saiga rifle a few years ago and I love it. did the conversion earlier this year.

It it didn't have to be 10 rounds you could go with a CMP 8 Rd M1 Garand.

That would only fit two of the five requirements of the OP.

The only rifle I can think of off the top of my pointy little head is a Saiga .308.
