Affordable scope

It's time to upgrade my scope. My question is "In the $500.00 and below price range what scopes give you good glass, ruggedness, but most important, first time every time adjustments?" I shoot a lot at the range, but don't compete, so I would really like an adjustable objective, variable power scope of good quality. I zero at 100 yards then dial bullet drop at longer ranges. Since the scope also goes hunting ,I would like a low end power setting of 2x or 2.5x.

Leupy's VX-III 2.5-8x36 ain't bad. Ziess's Conquest series is nice with constant eye-relief. Sightron Big Sky is a great value. Bushnell 4200 has some nice, unique features. You have a purdy good budget with many 4 star scopes available.

Fisherman is right on with his recomendations. Leupold VXIIIs are GREAT scopes. Also look at Burris and Nikon. I personally love Bushnell 4200's ( partially because I get them at a very low cost ) but they are great glass for the money spent.

At the $500 range you are getting into great quality scopes for most purposes.

I personally don't think you can go wrong with high end Bushnell or Nikon. I actually just bought a Nikon Monarch and have been pretty impressed so far. The funny thing is that when I went to Bass Pro, I was set on coming home with a Leupold or a Zeiss and was set to spend about up to $450..

I spent about an 90 minutes comparing Leupold, Zeiss, Nikon and Bushnell scopes and spent some time with a very informed guy at the counter. When I walked away, I had a new found respect for Nikon. I'm not saying Leupold and Zeiss aren't very nice scopes, but I thought the Nikon was a slightly better scope and a better value out of all 4 brands. Keep in mind that I only looked at scopes within the $300 to $450 price range. I'm sure the high end Zeiss and Leupolds are in a class by themselves.

In a 2.5-10x40 in the just-under-$500 range, I'd be looking at (new) Bushnell Elite 4200, (new) Nikon Monarch UCC, (new) Sightron S3, or (used) Zeiss Conquest. Wait, you said AO, which adds to the price - hmmm, that may change things - lemme think on this one a bit.
