I have an old Remington Speedmaster .22. It has an el cheapo Weaver scope on it that I've had since I was a kid. Lemme tell you, that rifle is so much fun to shoot. Anything within 100 yards is toast. With a real scope, I'm sure I could do even better with it.

I'm not sure how much they go for new, but you can find them easily used for under $200.

I have some other .22's, but nothing is as much fun as the autoloader. It's good and accurate for slow shooting, but will pop off 16 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger. :)

I've got a Marlin Model 60, which is a tube fed autoloader which holds 16 or 17 rounds, and a cheap 4x scope on it. I bought it all used for $100. New they aren't much more and they are a bunch of fun to shoot!

I recently picked up a Marlin 39AS and I couldn't be happier! It's printing 1/2" at 50 yards with Winchester Super X solids. It holds 19+1 in the tube magazine.
My other favorite .22 is a CZ 452 Lux. It also prints well on paper and is very solidly made. The American version comes with scope rings.
Either would be perfect for your intended use.

I've got a Ruger 77/22 varmit/target model topped with a Bushnell Trophy 4-15X40. Shoots 3/8" groups at 100yards, but can do better with match ammo. Total cost was $580 not including tax and dros. If you want an accurate rifle go bolt action. Hope this helps.

Have a Ruger 10/22T with a rebuilt Tasco World Class on it that ran me around $400 total. At 50 yards off a bench the accuracy is so good that it gets boring firing it after awhile.

45 Shooter, no problem. Let us know how your search goes and email me if you have any q's about my set up.

The CZ 452 in either the sporter or varmint configeration are very accurate and affordable. I think on average they seem to be more accurate than the Ruger 77's, and close to the Anchutz's and Sako's. Search www.shooterstalk.com under the small bore siloutte and you'll see what the shooters say about the various 22's. The CZ's are highly rated.

Perhaps a Ruger 10/22 adequately tricked out could be a solution. Also, the Marlin model 7000 is worth considering.

A whole cottage industry has sprung up around providing parts for Ruger 10/22s, so builiding one to suit your tastes can be done cheaply and easily.

I helped set up a friend with a standard Ruger 10/22, Weaver see-through scope mounts and rings, and a Tasco 4X scope. Total cost was well under $225. When I was done, his rifle could knock little plastic army men off the top of the target stand at 50 yards.

I've heard positive things about the new Thomson/Center Classic semi-auto. The street price is supposed to be just under $300, which would leave you a couple hundred for a nice scope.

There are lots of good used .22s around. Happy shopping.

I use a Ruger 10\22 with a Simmons 4x32
pro mag scope. Extremly clear. Anything within a hundred yds. is toast. And the great part about the set up i have only
cost about $450. The scope was only about
$60 and not to sound like I work for Simmons
,but its one of the best scopes I own.

45 Shooter, I have a Marlin 60SS, (stainless/synthetic) tube fed. New with a Simmons 3-9X40 scope, rings, case, sling, etc, for 300.00 after tax! Sucker shoots too. Will empty it's tube (14 rounds? Never counted) into the size of a quarter at 50 yards. And, a buddy and I compete against each other shooting empty shotgun shells at 100 yards from a rest. Most fun gun I have!!!

Remington 597 with a Bull Barrel and a aminated Stock. The gun will run you about 225.00 and a 4x12x40 Simmons scope will run you another 100.00. You will get one ragged hole on the target. Trust me *grin*

Roughly spend $100 on the scope and the rest on the rifle.

I suggest a Winchester Model 52D.

So accurate it's hard to belive.

45, you ever settle on a .22? Seems to me the operative term in your first post was informal "target" shooting. If you want more than plinking accuracy, I'd stick with a bolt action. The Ruger 77/22 is nice, but I'd look for a Remington 541T. You ought to be able to find a good one for around $250 or so. Top that with a Leupold 4x or VX-II 2-7x (good prices at Bear Basin) and you'd have a great quality combo.

Chipperman, I have one of those .22's and dang if that thing ain't accurate. Your right anything within 100+ yards is toast.

Remington 597. 3-9 scope. Total cost 185.00 or so. For informal target shooting, I don't think you really need to spend your whole stash.
