does anyone here own a taurus 'compact frame' revolver. I am very curious about these guns and will own one in time but I was curious to see if anyone here has exsperience with them. are they small... big...or how easy would it be for me to conceal one of them. :) :) :) would I be correct in thinking that they would be that same difficulty to conceal as full size 1911s????

I own the 650ss .357mag....ABSOLUTELY LOVE this firearm

Kicks like a mule with .357.

Depends on method of carry and dress actually. Generally, being smaller, a 5 shot snubbie is easy to carry concealed... a little wider that a 1911 but with a shorter grip... The grip being the most visible portion of a concealed carry piece, typically.

My two small frame Tauri (85 & 605... both blue) are well made, shoot well and to POA within 15 yds.

I have a Rossi/Taurus Model 462. (Taurus now owns Rossi)
While not a small frame it is the same size as a K frame Smith. It has a 2 in. tube and I find it very concealable with a Don Hume IWB open top.

Taurus 605 .357 -- puts on quite a fireworks display with .357 and makes it hard to get a 2nd shot quickly on target, but shoots nicely with .38sp +p.

No complaints. Fit and finish is nice on it and never had a problem hitting a target.

As for a 1911 -- I agree with the statement above it depends on how you carry. 1911's are big, but they're flat and fairly thin. The snubby is way smaller overall, making it easier for "deep" concealment, but for IWB carry -- well, the snubby gun would still be easier to conceal, but a "flat" 1911 conceals suprisingly well.

My .02.

The Taurus 85 Ultra-Lite .38Spl.+p is a pocket gun weighing only 15oz's. I carry mine in anywhere in pocket holster.

A Kimber 1911 weighs 38oz's and is 2" longer...Go figure

Um, he said:

And the answers:

Taurus 605 .357
The Taurus 85 Ultra-Lite .38Spl.+p

Not one is on topic. All these are built on the Taurus small frame, he was asking about the Taurus compact frame which are the Taurus 617/817, 415, 445, 450 and Trackers. I don't own one but the 2" compact frames seem to me to be around the medium/K-frame in size (maybe a little smaller, though the .38 and .357s are 7 shooters not 6 shooters) and about halfway between the small frame/J-frame and medium/K-frame in weight. Several would be near the top of my list for a belt or IWB gun, and it may be possible that the titanium versions are even pocketable (not sure on that, maybe some compact frame owners will know, I only have a small frame Taurus revolver right now).

"Please don't hit me Pa! I'll be good, I'll be good!"

We were just trying to help the guy out. Sorry. **sniffle, sniffle** :(

Compact Frame:
605SS
Length: 6-1/2''
Width: 1.378"
Height: 4.77"
Weight: 18 oz

Concealed Frame:
650SS
Length: 6-1/2"
Width: 1.378"
Height: 4.28"
Weight: 23.9 oz

Both are close in specs..so offering my opinion is ok, IMO.

Likewise didn't know there was a difference ... but they're all Taurus, they're all pretty conceable and within the spirit, if not the letter, of the thread.

Taurus Compact

For a number of years I carried a govt. model 1911 concealed; it got rather heavy so I bought a Glock 30 which is a nice gun but I did not like the round in chamber- no manual safety. About a year ago I bought a Taurus Stellar Tracker, model 455 in .45ACP. Now I carry nothing but that gun. I really like it both to shoot and to carry. Since I have been unable to find an off the shelf SOB palm out holster for it I carry in an Action Direct deep cover holster. Only problem with it is I have not been able to find a good way to carry a spare moon clip so I have 5 shots to do the job. I really believe that will be enough - I doubt that I am a target for any "professionals" out there!
Hope that helps. By the way, the factory porting looks nice but it results in a "blackened" front sight very quickly.

Taurus vs 1911

Several replys were excellent and it depends upon how you intend to carry a pistol. I have a Taurus Ti in .44 spl and love it, but only carry it in a coat pocket or backpack. If I need to carry concealed it would be a variation of 1911: Full Size, LW Combat Commander, Detonics, Officers ACP. The Flat sides reduce "printing" through clothing. Barrel length does not show, a full size grip does. Ask any undercover cop.

awesome

wow thankyou guys so much! you guys are awesome! thank you for the clarification chaim, you are right I was talking about the 'compact size' but everything still is helpful so I am very grateful for all info on the matter.
the reason I mentioned the size of a 1911 is that have noticed that pretty much all full sized 1911s are 8.5 inches long and about 5.5 inches high and the taurus compact series of guns are 5.40 inches high and 8.75 inches long which is about the same size as the full sized 1911. what are you guys opinion on concealment of the 'compact ' line of taurus revolvers. I would be keeping it in a
(maybe modified) one of these http://www.action-direct.com/234.htm

hey berretta couger thankyou for the picture. I also want a small frame revolver too so that did help. you guys are great friends :) :)

Sorry guys, I knew when I said it that it might be taken as obnoxious. I simply wanted to point out that the answers weren't really what he was asking to avoid confusion (kind of like if someone was asking about carriability of a full size steel 1911 and people were answering based on the lightweight commander, a smaller aluminum 1911- someone would need to point out for the benefit of those following the thread who may not know better that the answers weren't quite to the question asked to avoid misunderstanding or making a decision based on incorrect information). I was hoping it would be taken as it was meant, as just trying to help the guy get the info he was asking for.

I can't blame anyone for the confusion though, as now the Taurus website has some confusing and misleading info on their frame sizes. For years it showed the 605 as a small frame (which it is, it is not on their "compact" frame). Now the website shows the titanium 605 in stainless as being built on the compact frame, but all other 605s as being on the small frame  . But then that is only if you click the compact frame link, if you actually click the link for the 605 titanium the chart correctly shows it as being built on the small frame. Meanwhile the 617 (7 shot .357mag snub) is shown as being built on the compact frame, but the 817 (exact same sized gun in .38) is not on the website under either compact or small frame, but under "concealed carry revolvers" which is not an actual frame size (there are both "compact" and small framed revolvers on that list). With that kind of confusion even on the Taurus website I would expect there to be some real confusion over Taurus frame sizes.

Anyway, the actual compact frames are the discontinued 455, 450, 445, 415 and the current Trackers, 617 and 817.

But the thread originator himself says that the small frame info you guys gave him is actually useful for him so all is good anyway.

Maybe these will help put the different sizes into perspective

CH 85 (which I believe is the same basic size as the 605), 445 & 1911 full size side by side

hey joab!

awesome pictures man! they really show the diff. in the size!
I think Iwould probably go with the small frame for ccw and the compact for just shooting. thanks again for the pics.

not to be dense but to make sure, am I correct in thinking that the taurus revolver with the black rubber grips is the 'small' frame'

compact frame revolver

Big daddy, I have a taurus tracker 627 in .357, 4" ,these are the specs from Taurus.

Capacity: 7
Barrel Length: 4"
Porting: Yes
Action: DA/SA
Finish: SS
Grips: Rubber
Weight: 28.3 oz
Construction: SS
Frame: Compact
Front Sight: Fixed
Rear Sight: Adjustable
Trigger Type: Smooth
Length: 8-3/4''
Width: 1.531"

The reason "I" bought the gun was it was built on the "compact" frame. I don't see weapon on their website that says "small" frame. I think this gun would be the maximum sized and weighted gun that I would feel comfortable carrying. The Titanium model is 4oz lighter. Minimum barrel length is 4" if I'm not mistaken and all the trackers are factory ported. Follow up .357 shots are relatively easy and stable in my opinion, and don't forget, you get that one extra round if you need it. I had looked at a SS Taurus Mod 66 which is built on a "medium" frame. It weighed about 38oz and was somewhat difficult for me to shoot one handed in the same caliber, just weighed too much.
Hope this helps for something.
Scott
