Advice on XD sights

Hello, this had to have been asked about before but I cannot move the sights on an XD9 Service pistol with the usual means using a brass drift and regular hammer. I cannot budge either the front or rear sights in their dovetails. This with the slide in a vice and a little penetrating lube.

I am right handed but left eye dominant and most handguns with fixed sights shoot a bit left of my point of aim as I shoot with both eyes open. This is true for this particular XD.

I like the pistol and I don't want to change anything and just need to move either the front sight a hair left or the rear sight slightly right.

I am reluctant to spring for a decent sight pusher. The ones that seem to be the good ones are too expensive to use just for once and actually may not work.

Any advice , short of going to a gunsmith, would be greatly appreciated.

Hey! I'm in the same boat.

XD sights are notorious for this. You can find that both in threads online and even as caveats from certain sight makers. With the penetrating oil and vise you've already tried what I would recommend :(. Hopefully someone can come along with another trick.

If you do decide to go with a sight pusher, I've been using this one lately. It's a bit pricey I know, but it really is universal and I've used it with Glocks, P320s, and 1911s and it's awesome. It allows really fine adjustments without marring anything (I do tape the slide) and seems well built.

I'm no gun smith but I just "adjusted" the rear sight on my CZ.
I used an 8oz hammer (ball peen) and a steel pin punch. Been a mechanic most of my life and used to working with them. It didn't mar the sight or the slide.

Holy Shucks Tunnel Rat! $169.99 for a tool that I would probably use once:eek:

ShootistPRS... never had a problem adjusting sights until the XD...

I use it all the time because I own and buy a number of pistols so it pays off pretty quickly. There are cheaper ones out there for about half the cost and I've bought them too and they generally suck. If you average the cost over a number of years it's really not much. But to each his own.

If you're looking for the cheapest one time option a smith is likely your best bet. Shouldn't be more than $30 or so. If that's too much for you, Kentucky windage is always a thing.

You need a heavy duty sight pusher like the one TunnelRat got. When I had my XD I had to bring it into a gunsmith but bought the sight there so he put it in for free. That is about the only thing I did not like about my XD.

I had to drift the rear sight on my mod 2. Wore out two brass punches to move it maybe 2mm. Save yourself the aggravation and take it to a smith.
