Advice on a Field/Deer Combo for my husband

I am looking to purchase an automatic shotgun for my husband. He used rifles in the past for deer hunting, but we've moved and he is now doing some turkey hunting as well. I'm a little confused about the "all in one" approach," at the big stores vs. starting with a decent gun and adding to it. I can spent no more than $500. I have looked at Remington, Savage, and Mossberg, but again...it's a little overwhelming. My husband is a fantastic husband and father and I would really like to get him something he will enjoy and be proud of. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

First let me say welcome to tfl. Second let me help you a bit. I am sure you meant to say semi automatic. I would reccomend a pump gun for the value factor. For the money you cant beat a mossberg 500.
A mossy 500 can literally hunt any game with the correct accessories. Typically you can get a combo with a feild barrel and a slug barrel for about 350. With the choke tubes and the two barrels this can hunt deer, turkey, small game, and birds.
He can also get an 18.5 home defense barrel for this gun which is the gold standard for home personal protection.

All in all you cant find a better deal on a combo gun.

If you mena to buy a semiautomatic shotgun for your husband, you should be able to find a used Remington 1100 within the price range you specified. Like most shotguns, you can purchase extra barrels of different lengths, with sights for deer or big game, ventilated rib or plain, etc. for the 1100. It is a soft-recoiling very durable and reliable shotgun that has a deservedly very good reputation.
 
I concur with the second post from Vermonter ;) I do not own a Mossberg, but for the money stated by the Poster for her husband, probably the best deal going.
 
Before spending the money on a gun, make sure that it is legal to use a semi automatic in your area for the game in question. In PA, most hunting has to be done with manually operated firearms.
 
For your budget, the Mossberg is the most reliable shotgun you can buy. Also look into the Stoeger M2000. They use Benelli's (TOP of the line shotguns) operation system and have heard nothing but good about them. I used to love a good ole Remington but I really believe that their QC is in the crapper and you are buying the name. IMO. I recently got to field test their new VersaMax and was so disapointed it made me sick. Didnt cycle worth a darn!! If thats their best autoloader I wouldnt touch their more affordable models. Didnt mean to vent but anyways, go with the mossberg or stoeger. Thats my .02
 
If you want an automatic shotgun, and semi-automatics are often referred to as auto loaders, you might want to consider a new Mossberg 930, which comes in a deer model. Whatever you get, make sure you get the correct gauge and barrel. I am guessing he wants a 12 gauge.

Suggestion. My wife was thinking about getting me a gun last Xmas, which is very hard for her to figure out what I want. Some ladies know a lot more than me and shoot much better, but my wife is not one of them.

Unless you know exactly what your hubby wants, consider a gift card at something like the local Bass Pro or Cabelas. Guns, at least where I am at, aren't something you return if the shirt doesn't fit or is the wrong color.

And be sure to do what dale cooper says. Even if a kind of gun is legal to hunt with in your state, will he be hunting in nearby states. Say you live in Ohio and he hunts in Pa? another reason to get a gift certificate.
 
If you did go with a pump and wanted a used gun, there is a very nice Remington Wingmaster being sold by a private party in Orange County,CA for $500. Never been shot. Prefers a face to face transfer.
 
There are quite a lot of general purpose shotguns out there that will work just fine for turkey hunting........ but I second the gift card notion ..... either that or go with him to smaller gun stores and cruise the consignment racks....

Make sure he likes the idea of a safety located on top of "tang" opposed to the "crossbolt" safety near trigger guard...
