So here's the skinny- I have decided, for reasons I don't even completely understand, to trade my Springfield Operator LW (great gun), all 1911 mags and .45 ammo (200ish various rounds), and POSSIBLY my Surefire x300 for an ar-15 of respectable quality. The Surefire would only be part of the deal for higher end models, decent optics, rail systems, ect. I am not new to AR's. I have been given one heck of an offer:

Bushmaster xm15 cs2, with 8 mags (3 are pmags), roughly 500 rounds of ammo, carry handle, AND a Surefire light/laser combo (two separate components, joined by a rail mount) with pressure switch. Also has an interesting handgaurd that appear to be drop in, but rails all around. Only roughly 200 rounds fired through it.

Perfect. Can't believe it all came together so quickly. Just one problem- after examining the photo I was sent, it appears to be an 11.5 inch barrel with a big azz 5" flash surpressor permanently attached. Not sure what to do... It's a fair deal, no doubt, but the barrel length is a big issue for me. Why even make a model like that at all? I understand the idea of a 14.5" with a permanently attached cage to reach 16", but this is pushing it.

Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Need some help here!

I have to agree with the consensus thus far. Pass on this AR and get one that is what YOU want.

Unless you plan on going to an SBR. If that is in your plans, then go ahead and bite. When the Tax stamp comes back, you can chop off that gawd awful device and have your SBR ready to go.

Correction

Frost- You are correct that it is a ES2, not the CS2. Whoopsy.
About the handgaurd- surely not an Omega rail, so its likely a cheapy. In regards to building my own, I just can't afford to at the moment. I am steadily building up a stockpile of parts, and will be able to make my own build eventually, and it will be "The One". Until then, it's all factory assembled for this guy.

Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, this is a great trade... I have been thinking about the possibility of a barrel swap. I have a 16" HBAR attached to an A2 upper that is collecting dust right now, and have thought about having a smith swap them out. Anyways, I'm working on getting a photo posted, but the iPad isn't playing along... Will post as soon as I'm able.

Barrel swap is easy and straight forward. Buy a panther claw for your vice, buy a Combo wrench and swap it yourself. Youtube will show you all you need.

I agree with Bigbuckeye. If you consider it a good enough trade. Buy the barrel you want, swap it out and sell the one that came on it and recover some of the price of the new barrel. A barrel swap takes about $50 in vice clamp and barrel nut wrench and about 20 minutes, if you really take your time. You will need a torque wrench but if you don't have one, the auto parts store will rent it to you.

Would love to see pictures.

Spoke with the current owner over the phone last night. Turns out that the barrel is actually a 14.5 with a permanently attached flash hider to get it to 16". It seems that the barrel was given more width in that last five or so inches to give the appearance of a surpressor

Well, that seals the deal for me. Since its not an 11.5 with rediculous flash hider, I'm taking the plunge and going for it. About the handgaurd- not a cheap one at all, but rather Surefire's drop in rail system. By all indications, the rig is solid. Apologies again for lack of a picture. Will post once I've made the trade, just so you guys can all check out this odd barrel design. Anyone else heard of a design like this before?
