I´ve bought a new winchester model 70 in .300 win mag, and would like to put a new scope on it , Í´ve had 3-9x40´s in the past from leupold and nikon but would like something that suits better this bullet trajectory. any advice is welcome!

Either scope you mentioned is fine for general all around shooting with the win mag. Unless you are prairie poodle shooting at really long range, I think you have a great rig in the making!

I have a 7mm STW with a Leupold Vari-X II 4-12 x 40, I went with the higher magnification to help with longer shots. So far I'm really happy with it. I stayed with the Vari-X II instead of the Vari-X III because I've heard the only real advatage was the III gives you a bit more light gathering, say 15 min in the morning and 15 min in the evening. That's a good thing, but I couldn't justify the extra cost.

FWIW I stick with Leupold, I love their Customer Service and their no BS Lifetime warranty. Riflescopes.com has the best price I've found so far.

Hope this helped,

Looking at the .300 WinMag as a deer & elk gun: One of my longer one-shot kills on a deer was 350 yards; my 3X9 Leupold happened to be set on 3X.

On my 500-yard range, the 22" targets are easily hit with my scope set on 9X, and my hunting rifle groups 4" to 6".

On a hunting rifle, I see no particular advantage to having more than a 3X9 scope. You add more weight with the bigger stuff, but you don't add more "killability".

I just put the new Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 on my .300 Weatherby. This thing is fantastic. I don't know how Zeiss can make such a fine scope and keep it competitively priced like they have. My last several scopes had been Leupold VXIII's, but I can't see myself buying another Leupold as long as these new Zeiss scopes are on the market. They also make them in 3.5-10 and 4.5-14. The 3-9 I bought was $399. The other two are more expensive. I think a 3-9 is all you need.

My Schmidt-Rubin K31 with a scout-style scope mount with a Leupold
Vari-X II 3-9x42 with a no. 4 reticle. Works nicely, shoots straight
and will make short work of any wild boar in western Europe.

Else, my dad backs me up with a 9.3x74R. This is bound to shoot any
varmint, wether two- or four-legged, dead. Very dead.

I think only Schmidt&Bender ($$$) will make custom caliber bullet drop
calculators. Maybe it's time to get some mil-dot scope and do some
hold-over.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE

How about a comparison between Weaver and Redfield? the burris scopes are so expensive! rather buy European.

thanks Freestate for the advice, had been looking for a European but hadnot found a better price ( I consider a Zeiss for $400 real cheap) and in the same class as the swarovsky 3-9x36 for +/- $700. Why would anyone buy burris?

MORE ON SCOPES

been checking some prices and riflescopes.com has good proces on european but be careful with the american made, check catalogs like red head( basspro shops) and cabelas, also their manufacturers suggested retail prices are way past reality.

anypne likes nikon?
