Advice for a lefty with a 1911

Trade it for a H&K USP .45 or a P90 Ruger...

That makes it simple for leftys...

Ambi thumb safety (from several suppliers) and the Ambi Mag Release from Smith and Alexander - you'll be good to go!

Yep, I agree with Mikey, install an ambidextrous safety. Mag release, however, is up to you. I find that I can simply use my trigger finger. By the way, do you shoot one or two hands and have you shot with your right hand at all?

Ambidextrious safety is the only thing I've done on my 1911s. The magazine release is no problem (index finger operates it) nor is the slide release since the latter is accomplished by pulling the slide back.

The safety I prefer is the Menske (sp?) which is available from Brownell's. It the same one that Colt used on theirs and features an extra long disconnector/sear pin which is notched to retain the safety. That way you don't have to modify your grips.

I'm also a lefty. Ambi safety is critical. I actually prefer the mag release to be on the left side of the gun--using the index finger is faster. Be careful about the slide release in that you should not use an extended slide release. For some reason as a lefty it intereferes with the operation of the slide, at least for me. Otherwise, the 1911 is a perfect gun for lefties.

Make sure whomever puts the ambi safety on realizes you are left handed. I never really thought about it until I had problems with a Les Baer that had an Ed Brown ambi on it. Terry Peters, www.pt-partners.com , explained the physics of the force a lefty puts on the saftey and it does need to be set up just a tad bit different for "All the time" lefty use.

Do what I did find a Randall 1911 left hand
model , I have a couple now and always searching for others , They are truly great guns.

Randall Shaw: I own two Randalls, but they are of the proper configuration for us folks who are using the left side of their brain. :) Randalls are now very collectable, I haven't, even seen one at a gun show in years. I wish that I could have afforded, to bought more back in the early 80s,when they were on the shelves, in any well stocked gun shop. I have one just like a Combat Commander and the other is the Gold Cup version. Both are great guns to bad they didn't stay in business...7th

Randall, you've got a couple of southpaw Randalls? So do I and one is NIB. Welcome to the club! BTW, I also have the MS Safariarms Renegade which was made on Randall tooling.

None of my southpaw guns are for sale. Sorry.

Ambi safety should do it. The slide stop and mag release can both be operated with the trigger finger - which also reduces the likelihood of an AD while reloading, etc. I've found the C&S wide ambi to be the most comfortable for competition; the narrow, Swenson-style Wilson for carry, with the right-thumb lever reduced to G.I. dimensions.

I also have a service model C that I just picked up from a friend for what he paid for it.
