Im looking to trade a 357 mag for a 44 mag and was wondering if it was ok to just trade them. Would i have to get the gun registered to me? I dont know iv'e never traded a gun befor. Just trading with somebody not a pawn shop or anything.

You can trade strait across. But only to someone in your state. If you trade with someone in another state you must use an FFL dealer.

Generally speaking, a 44 magnum will be more valuable than a .357 - so bring cash or something else to trade.

Yea it would but this guy wants the 357. its a gun for gun trade. he said its to much gun for him, and i been lookin into getin one so it kinda works out fo both of us. Thanks for the help guys!

Make up a paper saying you such and such a name trade your 357 (write serial number down) for his 44 magnum (same thing) on such and such date. have him write one up too and you both sign and keep them. (cover your A$$):)

If you or any one you care about (alive or dead) signed papers to get the gun in the first place, I would continue the paper trail to get rid of it.

Bill of Sale

Couldn't you use a simple bill of sale? Here's a link to one that I used recently when I sold a pistol. You could print two and complete one form for the .357 and another for the .44. Put in whatever dollar figure you want (the same for both weapons). I think it's a good CYA form.

The way I read the question is do I need to get a purchase permit.
I live in Michigan and its OK to do a face to face trade but we still have to both get a purchase permit. We cant just swap guns because they are already registered. We cant send the guns by any delivery service or mail to each other any shipping has to be done to a FFL.

Very nice form! I like that it is electronically editable. For cost, perhaps just putting "Trade" would work?

Call your local sheriff or PD to check the laws in your state. In colorado it would be no problem (I would still do bills of sale) your state may be different.

Just a good idea for the future, any time I do a ftf trade/buy/sell I ask buyer/trade to see driver's license and hopefully a concealed weapons permit. It just makes me a little more confident in the purchaser.

Minnesota also - no permit for person to person within the state. YES on bill of sale with all the info for both guns and signed by both traders and keep it forever.

Thanks for the link to the form for the Bill Of Sale for Firearms /\/\/\/\

A very useful little form. I wouldn't think of selling or trading a weapon that I bought without some sort of paper trail showing I no longer have possession of that weapon. If it should end up in the wrong hands or used in some sort of crime, I would be able to want to prove I don't own it.
