Advantages of Kimber Compact over Ultra Carry

I plan to purchase one of these two within the next couple of weeks. Are there any advantages of the compact over the Ultra model. I have read in past posts that both are very accurate. It seems the Ultra would be slightly more concealable and a little lighter, but I don't want to suffer any performance loss. I have heard some folks knowledgeable about 1911's say that the Ultra carry size is close to the smallest you would want to get with a 1911, and might even be too small for dependable service. What do you think? Also, what is good carry rig for either?

Have had a Stainless Ultra Carry for about 2 months now, and love it. Great size, great weight and great shooter! Had a little trouble feeding ball ammo (of all things!) at first, sent it to kimber and had it back within 10 days. Since then, it reliably feeds everything I've fed it. They even threw in a set of Night Sights at half price for my inconvenience! It's suprisingly accurate for a pistol this size. Carry mine exclusively in an Alessi "Talon Plus" IWB holster. Very comfortable holster (and reasonably priced - $55). I would highly recommend both the pistol and holster, and I have been very pleased with Kimber's customer service. Hope this helps.

Rock,

I have a Kimber Ultra Elite and a Pro Carry. I find them both very accurate and feed whatever I put in them. I have experience a problem with the PC. The slide does not lock on the last round with some mags.

I usually carry the UE in a pager pal and it works very well. I recently acquired a Bianchi 3S IWB holster. The 3S works very well with both my Kimbers and Colt Lt. Wt. Commander.

Ultra elite is a real pleasure to carry. I also have an officer ltwt. The u/e is by far the more comfortable of two to carry. Once I got the right mags for it, it has performed flawlessly. Carry both in a Sparks versa max2. I forget I have the kimber on sometimes. I don't want to get into the performance discussion. Suffice it to say I have confidence in both to do the job with the ammo I have selected.

Rock,
Don't take me wrong, I love Kimbers. I carry an Ultra Elite, but have you checked out the Springfield LW Compacts? I was looking at one this past weekend at my local gun shop. It's almost as light as the Ultra Elite 26 oz. You can get it in stainless or matte.
If you decide on the Kimber, there's barely a performance loss between the Pro and Ultra. The Ultra is much more concealable. Add the factor of it's lighter weight and you have a nice carrying piece. Just make sure you put atleast 200-300 rounds through it to work out the kinks.
Like Vee stated, he had a problem with the slide not locking on some mags. This is a common problem with some of Kimber's guns. It's easily fixable by installing a new Wilson stop. Regardless of what carry piece you get, practice, practice practice.

hi rockjock:
advantages of the compact over the ultra?
about 70 fps, in the case of the compact aluminum or pro carry, about 3 more ounces where it counts- up front, longer sight radius, less muzzle blast, and it still maintains a quicker-than-5" cycle rate with the added benefit of more weight at the end of the muzzle (did i say that already?)...

the ultra's only main advantage is pure weight, although my contacts at kimber will try and tell you that the ultra is the most inherently accurate platform of all their guns (the supermatch is the only one that is guaranteed, insiders tell me that some consider the ultra most accurate). i've put tens of thousands of rounds through both compacts and ultras, and have nothing but praise for them.
good luck choosing!
regards,
joe
