Advantages of Extended Chokes

Are there any real advantage to extended chokes in shotguns besides being able to remove and replace by hand? I can see the desire to have a longer rifled choke to better impart the slugs to spin for accuaracy but what about a standard modified choke as opposed to an extended modified choke, etc.?

You mention the obvious reason.
The extended chokes allow you to keep them snugged up during a day's shooting (without having to stick your finger in the barrel:p),
tell at a glance what choke is in the barrel, and quickly change them out as well.

The extended chokes also serve well to protect the muzzle as you are moving from post to post or station.
Lots of asphalt walkways these days.

Only pattern board work with your load and gun will show if there are improvements to be gained on your patterns.
But that is true of any style choke as well.

Longer tubes also mean the choke can be more gradual resulting in more consistent patterns. This is especially important with tighter chokes such as the extra full turkey tubes.

Excellent comment. Everyone jumps in on this with regurgitated advice (read it somewhere) but very, very few have put the time in on a pattern board to make a factual comment. It's an eye opener when you do.

On a SxS or O/U where one wants to shoot steel shot, you can get tubes with the constriction beyond the barrel
I did not find any performance difference between the two. On the ones that I checked the rate of constriction was the same.

In my particular case, I found the best possible pattern for my particular shotgun in a particular clays game with an extended choke.

Then I liked the way it looked so I bought a full set.

Extended chokes allow you to ID what is in your barrel
Extended chokes allow you snug them when loose
Extended chokes allow you to change them as needed
Extended chokes allow to protect the barrel muzzle
