Actions for build

Is a Rem 700 SPS action(blued) sufficient for a custom made gun? Are custom made guns usually/always built on 700 actions?

Certainly. Most gunsmiths using a 700 will start a custom build by truing/blueprinting it so everything fits correctly.

Not even close to always. It's probably the most used factory action, but I don't know if it's the most used action for custom builds. Savage actions are used often, as are Weatherby, Browning, etc. Many custom rifles are built on custom actions, too. There are many from many makers, each designed for a different use/niche. Here's a list and a short review of each.

If you have it, fine.

By the time you pin the recoil lug, true the action, add a rail, etc. Starting with something like the Surgeon starts to look like a good idea...

It's probably the most used factory action by professional gunsmiths. There are a boatload of DIYers that build ground up custom rifles on Mausers and Savages because it is so easy compared to a 700.

Like the man said, you'd come out ahead by bypassing all the work that has to go into a factory 700 and obtaining an aftermarket action. My favorite 700 clone is the Stiller Precision Tac 30/300.

I was looking at the stiller stainless predator. Does stiller make better ones suited to a stainless 7mm rem mag that will also be used for hunting?

I agree on the Stiller actions. A well made and tight tolerance Remington 700 clone.

Jerry is making our actions for us. The only change I made in his design was the addition of the modified AR style extractor which Jerry has incorporated into his actions.

Depending on what you are trying to create, you might also look up The Montana Rifleman web page.He makes a controlled round feed Win M-70 clone. He also makes barrels, and you can get a barreled action.Prices are reasonable

M-70 stocks, bases, etc are supposed to work

Then another option would be the CZ.Brownell's sells them.

Just giving you some options
