Acorns Acorns everywhere....

ARGHHHHHH...

Looks like the first half of deer season is going to be tough. 'corns are everywhere, deer are scattered, & they don't have to move much. (and they're not because it's so dang hot.) The brush/grass is so thick you'd have to step on a deer to see one. BTW, it should get better because we're finally going to get a (cold???) front...Lows will go from upper 70's to lower 60's. Break out the heavy jackes and insulated boots! At least I can now go get the paper w/out breaking out in a sweat...

yep....in my area here, hickory nuts and acorns are more plentiful this year than any other year I've ever seen. Good for wildlife and good for hunters. Makes it a little tougher to hunt deer as the food supply in the woods is good, but will make for some heavy deer and turkeys this year, and some nice racks on next year's deer. Around here, when deer have this much high energy food available in the fall, severe winters have little or no effect.....and the amount of nuts I see uneaten on the ground in the woods as of yet, means that there will be plenty to paw thru the snow to get at later this winter.

Yep, welcome to my world, every year. There's food for them EVERYWHERE, so it's hard to pattern & ambush.

It is the exact opposite where I am at. No acorns due to a late frost. Oh yes there will be corn available for the deer to eat.....:)

Yep they are dropping pretty good. Some places have more than others, but overall I have been seeing allot of deer under the oaks.

I try to increase my odds by bush hogging around the trees so the ground is clean and they can get to the acorns easier.
I also give them some supplemental feed for about two months before the season, and quit a few weeks before the season opens.

I haven't heard that term since I was at a conference in North Carolina! We call it shreading here in Tx. Thanks for the tip. I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Any acorn reports from NE Missouri? Generally those type of years with good crops mean a good rifle season for us.

I've hunted on other places where the acorns (when they started falling) kept the deer from moving around, at lease until they ran out or soured. Now, I'll try to setup my stand & feeder near as many oak trees as possible. That has been working out for me pretty good so far.

Every tree down here is loaded w/ acorns...LOADED...Deer don't have to move at all to find them, or water. I'm hopin' it's going to give us a bumper pig crop. Hard to tell rightnow though. 'corns are so thick that the hogs aren't rooting. I'm seeing lots of tracks in the creek bottoms though.

LOADS OF ACORNS? try hunting around 3 to 5 pm. The deer move when it warms up and the skeeters drive them nuts. I have been seeing movement around that time this week. Full moon and mosquitoes= mid afternoon travel.
That is subject to change with weather patterns. Good luck.
