Accurizing a Weatherby Vanguard

I have a Vanguard in 22/250. It will shoot 1 3/4 groups at 200 yards most of the time. When I shoot of bags the groups will be in the 1 3/4 range only if I put the front bag under the front trigger guard bolt. But off a bipod its a differant story. The barrel has a lot of pressure at the tip of the stock. Should I try to free float the barrel or get a stock that wont have as much flex? I really like the Boyds Ross thumbhole sporter and for $78 for the VIP stock its really not a bad deal.
Any ideas? Just so you know when I hunt its mostly with a bipod.

Glass bed the front piller and relieve the pressure on the barrell. Also relieve pressure on any portion of the barrel that is touching the stock.

I have the same model (Vanguard) (by Smith & Wesson) in 243. From a machnine bench it will achieve 1/4" moa on cold shots using the above process.. Good system and a good gun.

I floated the barrel and dropped the trigger pull down but it wouldnt go any lower than 4lbs. But it did tighten my groups up quite a bit. The best was a .89 the worst was a 1.34 at 200yards off sandbags. That was with Federal Premium 55 grain. I think it would get even better with a better trigger. The one thats in it now feels rough. Maybe I'll look into a Timney trigger next when I get a little extra money.

I work on Howa and Vanguard triggers all the time. It is a pretty easy process to disasemble the trigger, smooth it out and drop it into the 2-2.5 pound range and have it pass all safety checks. It is cheaper than an aftermarket trigger by far. :)

The Glassing is important, and it does work. From what you describe, MOA, could be in the ammunition. I have found that different Mfg'd ammo will group different in each gun. The ammo which acheived .89 is obviously the the ammo for that gun. If you still have the box, look at the lot number. Try and get the same lot number in your next purchase. What you have accomplished, is "Marrying" ammo to the gun. Even a little heavier, longer bullet may help. This is ultimately important for surgical placement of a bullet.

Using the proper trigger control will also improve on the grouping, even if you have a 4lb wgt on the trigger. Although easier with the lighter trigger, one must follow the proper shooting technique in all aspects.
