Accurate Load

Rifle: 700 Remington Sporter 24" barrel. 30-06.

I have two bullets to load. Hornady: 178 A-Max & Sierra 180 HPBT Match.

I like IMR-4350 & H-4831 but have a few others. If you were to work up accurate loads for these bullets which powder would you use??

47 gr 4064 with the 175gr or with 168. Both shoot very well in the 3 '06s I have as well as some friends.
 
I have a very slow batch of 4895 surplus powder which loads closer to 4064 data. I may work up something with it also.
 
I've had good luck with H4350 and IMR4350. Load data isn't exactly the same, but performance for me has been. I prefer H4350 simply because it stable and more consistent over a wide range of temperatures compared to most other powders.
 
First 4831 and 4350 are great powders to TRY for 30-06.

What other powders do you have?

No load is a slam dunk. Each gun even if same mfg, same production line and one serial number sooner or latter will shoot differently.

If you are really lucky, you may find one that shoot almost anything with all sorts of powders happily.

If I was going to shoot 30-06 (and I do) then those are two of the powders I would try first.

Rest depends on what you have and I would not go buy any other powder until I had run those through a full scale test from bottom to top with the bullets you have.
 
It is hard to beat IMR 4350, but I have also had excellent results with W760, if you would like a ball powder option.
 
My best results in my Ruger 30-06 was with W760. But who knows what will work best with your particular set up. You'll need to experiment a bit. For me, that has always been the most interesting aspect of handloading.
 
The Winchester I had back when like both 4350 & 4831. With the rifle I have now I bulk load & bulk shoot with surplus powder & pulled bullets. It does well for what it is fed.

With the Hornady & Sierra bullets in the first post I'll use these 2 powders & have loaded the first rounds for testing with 4350. I'm sure somewhere between min & max I'll find something that will work.

The reason for the question was to find what others would do & where they would begin. I have plenty of IMR 4350, IMR 4895, & several 8 pounds jugs of a very slow lot of 4895. I'm out of 760/414 at the moment but will lay some up when the time is right & wouldn't be surprised it it worked best.
