Accuracy/Range of 10/22 vs Mark II/III

Looking at getting a .22, but trying to decide if I "need" a rifle or can make due with a pistol.

How accurate would the Ruger 10/22 be versus the Ruger Mark II/III at

25 yards, 50 yards and beyond up to 100 yards?

I have both. Would say up to 30 40 yards a good shooter could equal. Past that, at least for me, the 10/22 is the better choice for consistant groups.

Within the limitations of the shorter barrels the handguns are mechanically just as accurate as the rifle.

Because it is a rifle the 10/22 is easier to shoot accurately than a handgun.

The greater velocity of the longer barrel gives the rifle accuracy at longer ranges than the handgun.

Basically a 10/22 Pistol

How about the Ruger Charger. It's a pistol that shoots like a rifle and very accurate at the ranges you have listed. ... ;)

Personally I find your two choices a little confusing as I have never seen this expressed this way. I can actually see you buying both with the rifle being first. .... :)

Be Safe !!!

The 10/22's longer barrel and sight radius will make it the better shooter over those distances. For me, it’s a challenge to hit an 8-inch steel plate at 25 to 30 feet with a .22 handgun, but just yesterday, I nailed that plate probably 45 times out of 50 with my 10/22 at 50 yards using knee for support, and iron sights and shooting fairly rapidly. If you want to be consistently accurate at 25, 50, and 100 yards, go for the 10/22. Add the handgun later would be my philosophy.

My 10/22 has a GM barrel and a Kidd trigger. From a rest or a bipod, it is probably capable of something like .5” to .75” at 50 yds. I have a very nice MK II678GC with an Ultradot L/T on it. I suspect in a Ransom Rest it is capable of something approaching 1” at 50 yds. with ammo it likes, but from a more typical rest is probably more like 1” at 25 yds. From this I conclude that a good rifle can approximately double the accuracy range of a good pistol.

There are all kinds of conditions to be placed on a selection here. If weight and volume are critical, a scoped pistol may be the way to go. The Army instructors at their SEAR school seem to think so.

Like Pahoo I to find your choses a bit puzzling. Comparing pistoles to rifles is like apples to oranges, they are similar but just not the same. Any good quality 22 rimfire is capable of shooting far better than 98 out of 100 people shooting them and the longer the range at which they are being shot the more stable the shooting platform must be for good accuracy. Over 50 yards (for most shooters) is where the rifle begins to show far better accuracy. Agin like Pahoo I also think you might need to get one of each starting with the rifle. I think your choice of Ruger is outstanding, they are very well made mid-priced firearms and a excellent choice.

I had a 10/22 in the past. Great gun. Getting back into guns a bit and right now just want one 22. Hence the pistol/rifle question. Will probably end up getting both I suppose. Just trying to figure out how much more accurate the rifle is or if I could justify making due w just the pistol.

my 10/22 Target model with Kidd trigger and using Wolf Match Target ammo has put 10 shots into a 1 inch group at 100 yards. That's the best group I've ever shot with it and it was on a nearly wind free morning.

I've also shot it at 200 yards but the groups really open up when the wind blows.

22 pistols are capable of some great accuracy as well. It's pretty easy to hit metal plates off a bench rest at 100 yards.

I'd start with the pistol... just easier.... shoot at short distances and you spend less time walking back and forth between targets.

22's

It has been my experience that somewhere arround 75 yards the 22 lr srarts an abrupt drop. If you sight in at about 25-35yards with irons you are good for+/- 1"out to about 70 yards. Scopes with their elevated line of sight play hell with a +/- 1"requirement. A high rise mount has you at -2 1/2 at the muzzle!.
