Accuracy of Stg-58 FAL with Bipod

I've heard that the DS Arms Stg-58's are fine rifles, and when scoped have quite good accuracy. However, I've seen some comment that removing the bipod improves their performance. True?

What else can you tell me about the DS Arms Stg-58 rifles?

Thanks. Regards from AZ

I think I know the answer to this

If the Bi-Pods were not mounted on the Barrel it wouldn't affect the accuracy. I'm not sure exactly what the term is but it affects your barrel vibration and can cause accuracy to diminish.

When the Bullet travels down the barrel, the barrel vibrates a certain way. If you start hanging things on the barrel it makes your vibratory rate inconsistant. Its not that much though.

I think the Bi-Pod is a plus especially for such a heavy gun.

I Can shoot from 1inch to 8 inch groups depending on the ammo I use in mine.

I can do ~1"-3" groups at 100 yards with good ammo in my stg-58 using bipod and iron sights. If you want the most from your STG then take the bipod off and get a freefloat handguard for it. and a good scope mount, ARMS or DSA mount. and i agree it has to do with barrel harmonics, it disturbs it, but unless you are as good as your gun, you won't notice it unless it is extreme case. I find that the weakest link for FAL's is the trigger pull, it usually need lots of work!

I put a scope on it. Check out the Lock and Load forum for the Previous Pennsylvania TFL shoots I organize. There are a few pictures of me with my FAL.

I have the DSA scope mount on it. And a 3-12x40 Sightron scope on it. We'll have more pictures and results after out gathering next Sunday so check back and see what those STG58's can do.

I plan on testing it out to 400yds next week. I've hit out to 500yds with the Bi-Pod and crappy ammo.

SadoPop is correct, the bipod being mounted on the barrel gets blamed for some innacuracy, typically with follow-up shots, not the 1st or 2nd shot, though.

Since I have my STG set up as a Designated Marksman rifle, with a SUIT, I decided to keep the bipod. In the field, you'd need the bipod to hold steady for 500 yard shots, and Highpower sling technique won't work well with that on an FAL.
