Accuracy Frustration---GGGGGRRRR

I have a new Remington 700 Titanium .270----the first time out - I tried various loads and bullet weights and managed to get several excellent groups with the half a box of 5 year old 130gn Hornady Custom loads my buddy gave me.

I bought several new boxes of the same load and have been out several times with dismal results-----that half a box was the only load this rifle ever shot well.

I don't handload and have no plans to. The action has never been out of the stock---and I've heard mention of loosening the action screws and retightening them by hand--which I'm going to try this weekend. What's frustrating is that I've seen this rifle put out good groups---well for one day anyway.

Any other quick fixes you guys can think of?? --Short of all-out gunsmithing---and NO I'm not going to free-float it or bed the action or anything else to ruin the trade-in value for when I dump this---this is a $1000 dollar rifle---I expect better than this.-- I'm giving this rifle one more chance this weekend--otherwise its Hasta Lavista Baby!!

Thanks.

It's kinda strange how it shot well and then all of a sudden not.

You might want to try and find what Hornady did to that load over the past five years. Try experimenting with other brands.

Also maybe something vibrated loose.

Are you sure the crown didn't get dinged?

Before I go out this weekend--I'm going to mess with the action screws---give it a good cleaning(even though it doesn't need it)---and go buy several brands of ammo in 130gn--140gn---and 150gn bullet weights----and recheck the scope mounts(did this before too).

I'm going to spend all day saturday with the rifle---3 shot groups with plenty of time to cool between groups---no decent groups----she's gone.

I'm not expecting benchrest target rifle groups---but an inch to an inch and half group would be fine---after all---it is a light weight rifle with a skinny little barrel---but the current 3 to 4 inch groups are unacceptable.

I tried quite a few loads the first time out---they were all 3 to 4 inch groups until I tried that half a box.

Much as I would like to keep this rifle and not take the beating on the trade-in----there's no way I'm dumping more money into a $1000 rifle---I can go get a Savage or Ruger that costs 1/3 to 1/2 as much and outshoot this thing all day long.

I think your on the right track with the various loads. Some rifles are very picky, some aren't.

The biggest variable is the scope. Ninety per cent of the problems I've seen involved the scope. If you have one that's proven on another rifle, try trading them, especially if the scope on the 700 is an old one.
