Accuracy: Barrel length versus type of site

What is better for short range (IDPA): A model 65 3" barrel (fixed sites) or a model 66 2 1/2 in. barrel with adjustable sites. In other words: what is more important for accurancy, barrel lenght or type of sites.

Thanks in advanced for your knowledge.

Half an inch of barrel is not going to make any difference in accuracy.
I prefer S&W adjustable sights, not because I can move them, but because I can SEE them better than fixed.
However, the 3" gun has the advantage of a full length ejector rod; the short rod on a 2.5" revolver takes a good whack to clear the empties, and may not always work then.

If you already have both a 2.5" and a 3", try both and see which you can shoot (and reload) better.
If you have one or the other, shoot it before spending more money.
If you have neither and want to break into SSR, forget the snubbys, get a 4" adjustable (M66 in K frame) and don't worry about the details.

Snubbie sights

I think that adjustable sights on a snubbie gun is kind of a waste. Snubbies are usually used for close defense work, but they can be accurate enough to justify adj. sights if you have the concentration to bother with making tiny groups. I had a 15, 2 incher with adj. sights once. Adj. sights can be more prone to damage which is a reason that they would not be desireable to me on a concealed defense gun. Also are higher profile on a snub.I am Fine with the fixed sights on my 38 snubs. But I do have a 4 inch 66 that has nice orange and outline adj. sights that give quick pointing on that gun. Don't mind them on that one.

It depends. Honestly, in 357 Magnum I prefer my Colt Trooper MKIII with AS, TT, TH and heavy walnut grips. It simply has 4" of sight plane and a CLEAR sight picture. I have a 4" M65-3 also for part-time CCW. It is a sleeker profile, no snags on clothing and I have finger groove grips on it. I shoot better with the Colt, I shoot faster with the S&W. I don't see any advantage in double action, adjustable sights or a non-bobbed hammer in a snub form. They are up close and personal weapons. Having said that, I am getting a 2.5" M19-3. (rolleyes)

Sights. Sights make more of a differance to me than almost any other factor. I seem to do best with the "Straight Eight" style over under dot configuration. I like the fiber optic front sights as well.
