Accessing my fathers collection

I was in California all week and had a little time to spend with my ailing Father.
I hadn't shot nor seen many of the guns I grew up shooting and wanted to see what was still around as he had said he sold "most of them" years ago to my dismay...

This one I think is pre Mod 10, either a M&P or Victory maybe?

And this one, with incorrect grips I believe is a 6 inch Mod 10, or Pre Model 10

Missing is the K-22 Target..That bums me out, also the Colt Officer Model Match in 22 is gone..:(

Of the "Model 10's" shown, I would hazard a guess that all three are pre-Model 10. The top nickel one looks like a refinish, the hammer & trigger shouldn't be bright in color. The top one could be a Victory model.

The middle of the three looks like a real sweetheart, but also pre-Model 10.

Bottom of the three is frustrating because of the picture quality, but same as above.

The 686 looks just like mine and those grips are correct. If it's a no-dash or a dash-1, it should have an "M" stamp near the Model number/serial number to indicate that it's been through the recall process. If it hasn't, S&W still does these.

Serial numbers on any of these and we can maybe find some production dates!

All three of the pre Model 10s appear to be Military & Police Hand Ejector Model of 1905. Serial numbers would tell.

The nickeled one is definitely a 4th change, and my guess is that it's a reworked WW II era, and it's definitely a post-factory nickel job because both the trigger and hammer are nickel plated. The factory didn't do that.

The bottom two are both earlier as they have the mushroom cap ejector rod head while the nickeled one has the "fat sleeve" ejector rod head.

.

Just an aside - I find it curious, why your Dad, and many of my older (70+) friends & relatives, have completely shed their long guns, but switched to & ramped up their handgun inventory.

(I've also done so, but only slightly.)
