Absolutely obsessed............

with getting a new rifle!! With the recent spate of negativity I've seen on AR's, I'm ready to take the plunge on a .308 instead. Now the hard part-
Found a SAR-8 for $875, and Imbel carbines for $575.
It gets better.
I've searched threads; hit other boards; and even recruited other members for advice. I am still hands-off ignorant in making a knowledgeable decision here, and lack the confidence to commit to a purchase. Basically, I still need help from someone experienced. The postings on barrels, triggers, mags, confuse me, and I don't want and can't afford a $1500 toy from a specialist. I DO want one that's accurate, etc. Anyone care to walk me through my first important rifle purchase in years? I'm determined; and grateful in advance.

Citizen, I've been pondering just the same thing. It seems a perfect response to all the confusion going on around us at this time. I spoke to my gunsmith on Tuesday and was going to have him order me up an STG-58 on an Imbel receiver. This is the person who has built several of my M700 long range rifles and his work is first rate. He recommended I pass on the STG-58 unless I had one done up by someone who specialized in the FAL pattern rifles. He believed that the 'parts guns' could be fine but just as easily may not be. Between the AR series and the parts FAL pattern rifles, he recommended the Bushie or Oly for out of the box reliability and quality. He felt the FAL was a much better battle rifle but also believed gunsmithing by a pro would be necessary to make one of the parts guns what it could and should be.

Shop carefully.
Goto fnfal.com and read all the downloadable text articles that you can. Thats the 1st place to start.
Then you have to DIG. Scour your local shops... your shops in the next city over, your gunshows within your state...
Look around - hard.
Find the best parts... or examples... You'll find the right gun at the right price.
You can find all the right parts to have a weapon put together - have a qualified smith with FAL experience put it together... Have him pay especial attention to barrel alignment, sights, and trigger.
Even if you have a cheaper rifle - it will be a choice rifle.
