Absentee Ballots - does your vote really count?

News today of those pushing registration and absentee ballot voting, and helping in the voter's selection. This in Florida and some other states where senior citizen voting could make a difference.
Apparently these people go thru the community and nursing homes to register voters for absentee ballots, and then "help" them in their choices.
Many of these senior voters have no idea what the issues are. Many disabled and not understanding.
This does not give me a real warm and fuzzy feeling about voting in general.
Especially after reading the 165 pages of the Official Voter Information Guide for the state of california. - So I've pretty much decited on the issues. Given the senior voter problem with the issues that are not understood by many of the seniors who have no idea what they are doing - does my little vote really count?
This is not a slam against Senior Citizens (I am one). It is a slam against those who would take advantage of the situation.

I completly understand what you're saying...seems if someone needs "help" voting (at least the kind you were refering to) they should be deemed unfit to vote..Whats to keep every nursing home or mental hospital's staff from "helping" thousands "see" things their way at election time???

In florida, in most counties.. if your vote won't "statistically make a difference" they don't bother counting them..

IMHO: that is WRONG!

It's a good point. I was doing a "first review" of my California voter package tonight and my eyes glazed over just scanning the high points. I'd say that IMHO a *LOT* of people (not just seniors) would have a difficult time of it.

It angers me that the system allows for manuplation as you describe and the fact that the vote of someone who hasn't taken 2 seconds to look at the issues carries as much weight as one where the voter has taken hours to research and decide.

It's no wonder the lunatics are running the asylum since they have as much say as those that take it seriously. If our country *reallY* reflects the "will of the people" then we are in deep doo-do. :(
