my friend just got a ruger sp101.

we have found some sites online that have the cowboy ammo at a very good price. Can we shoot the cowboy ammo 357/38 out of the ruger?

will it hurt the gun?

since it is cowboy ammo is cheaper can we just use if for the range, plinking and just to have fun?

some places have the cowboy 38special for $6.50 and the regular not cowboy for about $9-10 dollars.

thanks.

The cowboy stuff is just lower powered lead loads, won't hurt the gun at all. It's fine for casual use.

Plinking and having fun is a great use for lower powered ammo like Cowboy stuff. Helps you learn your gun and how to handle it.

But for defensive purposes, which the SP was designed for, you may want to use ammo designed along the same lines.

Sure can use the Cowboy loads. You may want to keep a box of FMJ (full metal jacket) even though they are $9-10 a box. Just shoot 1-2 cylinders at the very end of your range session. Cowboy loads are all lead and lead can really make your gun dirty. Which leads to longer cleaning time. I would just shoot 1-2 cylinders at the end of your session of FMJ and that helps clean some of the lead out a little. It will shorten your cleaning time some.

Ruger SP101's are one of my favorites! Congratulations on your friend's new purchase. Beware....once you begin to shoot it. It can become addictive.
