I read the topic on the hammerli 280 she used in Point of no Return. It looked like a 22.What exactly is a .32 s+w long wadcutter??Is it even available in the US?I have never even heard of it until now.I would like to get one someday. It must be pretty acurate in .22 and cheap to shoot. It's just one of those awsome looking guns. That might be why they used it in the movie?right? What was that finish?Stainless?Does anyone agree that it would be a nice addition to any collection? How much does a gun like this cost?Does anyone have any recomendations on caliber for this gun .22 or .32s+w?I like .22 but don't know much about the gun itself. Thanks for any intel.PS. someone mentioned that it may have been refinished??

The Hammerli 280 created quite a stir in the firearms press when the pistol was first released. Hammerli had used a large amount of carbon fiber in the design, and folks were still coming to grips with the idea of a Glock. (A 'plastic' target pistol! *Gasp!*)Thus, the finish seen in the film is likely painted on.

I believe Federal Cartridge is the only US company to offer match wadcutter ammo in .32 S&W Long. Akin to the .38 Special wadcutter loads in the US, the .32 S&W Long is the popular centerfire bullseye cartridge overseas.

The Hammerli 280 has been discontinued but there are still plenty on the market at about $1200. While it's very accurate, it's never taken the bullseye world by storm; most shooters still prefer either the older 208S (also discontinued, BTW) or the newer SP-20.

The .32 S&W Long is the least powerful cartridge that delivers target grade accuracy while still being legal for ISSF and NRA centerfire matches. It's feeble enough to use the same blowback system of operation used for .22s and most of the popular European target .22s are also available as .32s. At a bullseye match, you'll find the .32 shooters crawling around the firing points four spaces to their right, trying to find the brass their pistols flung there. (Because the .32s are straight blowback designs, the slide/bolt doesn't slow down much before the case hits the ejector, resulting in very energetic ejection.)

Commercially loaded .32 S&W Long wadcutter is available from Federal, Lapua, and Magtech. If you buy a pistol that shoots it, I suggest buying your ammo by the case because you aren't going to find much in your local gun shop.

By the way, did anyone here notice the pistol carried by Two Face in "Batman and Robin"? I think it was a nickel-plated Benelli MP95E.

S&W also used to make a target pistol in .32 S&W Long, Wadcutter. I think it was the model 59. It is a somewhat rare bird.

The reason most of these state Wad cutter only is that the magazine and chamber profiles are too short to accomodate the 32 S&W Long in LRN profile. Most people who shoot this load cast their own bullets and reload their own rounds. The cases do look odd, though, with the round sitting flush or nearly so with the end of the case!

Chad,

are you referring to the S&W m52, in 38 Special, LWC's only? I believe the 59 is the predecessor of the 5906. I don't recall S&W chambering a semi-auto in 32s&w long.

1911guy,

As stated, the 208s and 280 are discontinued. Their modern (current) Hämmerli equivalents are the Trailside Target and SP-20, respectively. The 280, when it was sold (and still is if you can find any. I've got a link to a source but am not at home right now to forward it) could be obtained as .22 only, .32 only, .22/.32 combo. Of course, you could buy the slide assembly for each caliber seperately if you only bought one initially. A fitted case that had recesses for all of the components was also available as was shorter/longer grips, various sights, additional weights, etc.

The finish in Ms. Fonda's gun was aftermarket. Don't know who did it. I pretty sure that it was .32 as the cocking grips are for the larger caliber. I'm sure they used the gun purely for looks (she was a super secret special agent, she can't be going around with a Glock). In the original French version, Le Femme Nakita (STAY AWAY FRON THE U.S. TV SERIES!), the protagonist used a Desert Eagle (pretty sure MkI/.357mag).

Bought my 280 early '90s for ~$1400-$1500 (.22 only). Bought the case after from Hämmerli USA/CA, at the time, the Hämmerli importer. Not sure if they are still in business as SIG (which Hämmerli is a part of) is now doing all the imports. Never really cared for the .32 as I knew it was not a popular round (which means ammo would probably be hard to come by).

I would suggest getting the SP-20 if you want a forward magazine well gun or the Trailside if you want a grip magazine gun. Both current offerings would be better to get parts and services faster than the older guns. PLUS, the Trailside is considerably cheaper. You mibht also want to look a the Benelli line of target guns, too. The Mp90S World Cup and Mp95E. http://www.benelliusa.com/products/

Haven't seen the movie for a while, but I seem to remember her firing 8 rounds (at least) from 1 magazine. The 280 magazine capacity in .32S&W Long is 5 rounds.

Er Citizen X,

It was a movie. If you want to see incredible magazine capacity from a regular sized magazine, check out a few Chow Yun Fat movies. I've counted 30+ rounds from a 15 round mag before reloading. Details such as correct numbers of rounds fired from a particular firearm/magazine is not even on the priority list when making movies. Pretty easy information to obtain, I think, but movie people just don't care.

Here's a picture I linked to on the same topic a while back.

As I had said in the previous topic, I held up a .22lr/280 next to it to compare, and yes, indeed, the cocking grips are the larger of the two.

hksigwalther (Ron),
I love picking out the firepower / magazine capacities 'bloopers' too. Just didn't want 1911guy cursing as to why he can't get more than 5 rounds into a .32 S&W L 280 mag, if he ever gets one. No harm done.
