"Gun Used In Self-Defense? Tell '20/20'!"

"April 6, 2007 — Have you ever defended yourself from a crime in your
home, in your business, or in public by using a gun? Perhaps you warded
off a potential attacker by simply showing a gun?

"40 states now allow their citizens to obtain conceal-carry permits for
handguns. Some people say that's dangerous, while others say it allows
them to protect themselves.

"If you have a story of self-defense involving the aid of a gun and would
like to tell it to 20/20, please fill out the form below. A '20/20'
producer may contact you."

It'll be interesting to see how the actual segment turns out...then again, I'll probably miss it unless ya'll let me know when it's on. I've not watched 20/20 in years.

It's not uncommon for any of the TV news organizations, particularly the "news magazine" shows like 20/20 or 60 Minutes to give airtime to both sides of an issue. It doesn't mean the entire segment won't still come off as anti-gun.

I also find it amusing that two people posted threads regarding this story within a couple minutes of each other.

Finally! A news show that is giving our segment of the population some airtime! I just hope they don't use our own words and experiences in some anti-gun twist!

???

Why don't they just have their researchers and fact checkers look up the "Armed Citizen" column in the American Rifleman, for about the last 50 years! Not only the details of the incidents, but the name and date of the published account.

Should be easy for anyone with the resources of a network "news" show.

I'd be fearful of the twist on this and would certainly really discuss the storyline prior to allowing 20/20 to air any comments.

20/20 will do a hatch job on self-defense. They have a track record of lieing to people about what the story is to be then stab them in the back with the story.

If you actually beleive that ABC's "20/20" would give a fair and honest
presentation on gun ownership and the 2nd Amendment; the same ABC which brings you "The View" with Rosie O'Donnell, go for it and fill out their form.

This would make it harder to find the least sympathetic (or possibly just plain dumbest) sounding people they can find who've been involved in SD shootings, in order to slant the issue.

I should probably reserve judgement until they air the segment, but I have dollars to pesos they're looking to do an anti-gun piece and just need a little fodder from the pro-gun side to make it look like they're covering both sides. It's a common tactic.

If this is a John Stossell segment{ and I am pretty sure it is} then we are in good shape. I would suggest the following though.

The people who need really send in their stories are:

1. Women who have defended themselves against exes{ preferrably ones who have violated restraining orders}
2. Elderly people

3. Disabled people, basicly anyone who would not have been able to defend themselves otherwise.

We do not need 300 pound bubbas, or ex military superjocks to tell their tales of " I fought off 5 muggers".

It would also be better if the story ends with no shots being fired.

Has anyone linked this story to the NRA? It might be something they could help with{ as opposed to their "help" with Parker}

I agree, Stossel would at least be somewhat objective. I agree with many of his takes on issues though I think he is a little left of me.

They'll spin into anti propaganda. Somehow they will focus on an act of self defense that is after the fact perceived as over blown, and somehow the gun used ends up in the hands of a mass murderer or something in that order.

Personally I do not have confidence in the left leaning media.

I recived an e-mail about this ,with a comment worth posting ,and that is for those who submit a story ...that they should use caution and be carefull of their spelling and words to discribe their story, lest the anti`s use poor grammer and gory details to make THEIR point aginst us . It could backfire .

Agreed! His "Stupid in America" special was outstanding and despite his flaws he's been a good face for the libertarian philosophy. He goes out of his way to lean to the right of his employers and seems to be a true a capitalist at heart. He's not perfect but I put more stock into what he says than most other journalists.

I smell John Stossel
Stossel or not, anybody who agrees to give an interview with a TV
network had better be ready to watch a hatchet-job done on them
and their situation. I've seen it done twice on distant family members
over legal problems they were having.
One of my nieces asked me personally if I thought she should do it.
I told her that only if she didn't mind being made to look like the worst
criminal since Dillinger, she should do it.
She did it, anyway. It was worse than I had imagined it would be.
My advice? Stay off TV. You'll be better off for it.

Walter ;)
