...with two of my new rifles.
About 7-8 weeks ago, I stumbled across a Ruger No. 1A in 6.5x55 Swede and last weekend I stumbled across a Ruger K77 RSI Stainless in .308 Win, each of them NIB (The Ruger K77 RSI is this year's special run for Lipseys: 18.5" bbl in a full stock carbine in stainless). The RSI set me back $749 while the No. 1A was $800. This ended up as an even swap for my SAI SOCOM 16...two rifles for one.
I mounted 2.5-8x36 Leupy scopes on each of them and loaded up some cartridges for test. I had gotten sub-1" 3-shot groups from the No. 1A in an earlier session using 140 gr Rem CoreLokts, but wanted to see how some hand loads would do. I had purchased some Lapua cases, Lapua Scenar 139gr bullets and some RL-19. I had IMR 4895, Varget, 140gr A-MAXs and some 142 gr SMKs so I made up a few combinations with different weights. This particular rifle apparently loves Lapua Scenars and RL-19...I got 3-shot groups of less than 0.66". I was getting 0.75" groups with A-MAXs and Varget...I guess I've found my speedboat rifle for next season.
Switching to the International-stocked 77, I was getting 0.75" 3-shot groups with my RL15/150 gr SMK hand loads. This was unexpected and really appreciated...I now have two go-to .308s for any CPX2 game...my Rem 700 SPS SS and the new Ruger. Given its length and weight, the Ruger will probably see most of the action.
These two rifles are the first Ruger long guns I've ever tried and am thoroughly pleased with my purchase. The both have nice wood, excellent finishing and shoot like a house afire. I don't think they'll be my last...in fact, I'm thinking that I may just go for an African in 9.3x62 for my Alaska hunting/fishing trip later this year or early next. I was thinking of a Win M70 in .375 H&H but........
