What if:....
Tomorrow morning, G.W. Bush scheduled a National press conference, with all media outlets present, and made this speech:

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen. After many long hours of soul searching, deliberation, and consultation with my advisors and Constitutional experts, I want to reveal my goals and plans, if I am elected to be your next President.”

“My Administration will immediately propose, and work toward the repeal of the current income tax structure, and abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service. All funding of certain Constitutionally defined Government expenses will be accomplished by a flat Federal income tax; not to exceed 17% of individual and corporate income.”

“Secondly, my Administration will immediately propose and work toward the repeal of all Federal laws regulating the possession of small arms, by law-abiding citizens of the United States.”

“Additionally, we will advocate and work toward the abolishment of ALL Federal laws regarding the personal use of certain drugs, now categorized as “Controlled Substances,” by adult citizens. Those currently incarcerated merely for the sale, or manufacture of these substances will be granted an immediate pardon, and released from confinement.”

“Further, my Administration will immediately begin dismantling the INS, and open all our national borders to all who desire to come into this Country for lawful purposes.”

“Lastly, as National policy, we will immediately de-fund all involvement in the Socialist-controlled United Nations Organization, and recall all of our troops currently engaged in peace-keeping activities on foreign soil.”---

THE QUESTIONS:

1.) What do you think would be the reaction of his opponents?
2.) What do you think would be the reaction of the majority of voters?
3.) What do you think this would do to his chances of winning?

*Since this is an entirely hypothetical scenario, please don’t respond by saying: “Nah, he’ll never do that!” or, “I just wouldn’t believe him!”

I would really appreciate reading your thoughtful responses. :)

1. Opponents would have a field day. The first thing they would do would be kow-tow to all the various special-interest groups whose oxen would be gored by this.

2. Initially they would cheer him. This wouldn't last, though. Within a day (max) the media would be up to full speed and be working in conjunction with item 1.

3. Hate to say it, but it'd kill his chances. Someone here had (has?) a signature line to the effect, "Individuals are smart, people are stupid."

Answer to all 3:

Look at Harry Browne.

Except that in Bush's case the Media will have to engage in a demolition and character assassination process along with a doom and gloom campaign targeted at every special interest group in America, so that Bush's popularity will be shrunk to next to nothing.

With Harry Browne they don't have to because (unfortunately) he is already there. He is never been a threat and (unfortunately again), he never will be one.

At least not in the immediate future with the current left-dominated media, education and culture. The soil is not fertile enough for his type of seed.

>1.) What do you think would be the reaction >of his opponents?

It would immediately be pointed out that social security, welfare, child programs, etc would disappear. Most people would see this as a bad thing.

>2.) What do you think would be the
>reaction of the majority of voters?

He'd lose all minority and old people votes, while others may come over to his side.

>3.) What do you think this would do to his
>chances of winning?

It would destroy them. He'd alienate minorities and the elderly with plan #1. He'd alienate the left and a lot of "mothers" with #2. He'd alienate most people over 40 with #3, and #4 and #5 would garner little response.

People are functionally retarded.

What would happen? The band would play "Hail to the Chief" at Al Gore's inauguration.

Too many X Files episodes affecting my subconscious ;)

Lone GunmAn of course. No matter, the NWO won't let anyone seriously stray from the party line. If that threat became real for them, the threat would be eliminated.

There's minor elements of this that might work. Stuff like "tough gun control for criminals only" versus restricting ordinary civilian RKBA can perhaps be sold, with the right spin.

But it can't be as bold-faced as stated above.

Good posts Guys, and I think you're correct in that it would be political suicide for GW to openly advocate even one of those proposals.

As I'm sure you all know, those proposals are a compilation of actual platform planks in the Reform, Libertarian, and U.S. Constitutional Parties.

"[Even if there would be] few tears shed if and when the Second Amendment is held to guarantee nothing more than the state National Guard, this would simply show that the Founders were right when they feared that some future generation might wish to abandon liberties that they considered essential, and so sought to protect those liberties in a Bill of Rights. We may tolerate the abridgement of property rights and the elimination of a right to bear arms; but we should not pretend that these are not reductions of rights." -- Justice Scalia 1998
