A very strange question

Hello all,

I have a weird question for all of you. Tomorrow I am buying a gun (my 4th). I think it will get here in the afternoon, and I'll go to my FLL to get it. Here is the dilemma. I need to go to the social security office to get some info dealing with my number updated. I'm being intentionally vague, but it has nothing to do with my name, age, or crimes committed. Here is my question: will getting something changed with my SSN affect my background check call to NCIS?

I think it won't, becuase according to the NCIS the info is collected from local and state agency's, and I don't think the SS system and NCIS are linked ( I base this assumption on no evidence whatsoever.)

So what do you guys think? Do you think i can call the NCIS and ask?

PS
I have had no trouble with purchasing the previous firearms.

This would be idea, but tomorrow is really my one day off. And if the gun arrives in the afternoon, then i'm up a creek becuase the office closes at 4

I can't imagine it would be an issue, since you're not required to put your SSN on the 4473 form it can't be that critical to passing the background check. Also, as was mentioned, the chances of whatever they do at the social security office being immediately available through the system is pretty slim.

Also, for the record, it's FFL (Federal Firearms License) and NICS (National Instant Check System).:)

When you fill out the form, don't put down your SS#. You are not required to do so, and it is only used for identification purposes if there is a problem. Unless your name is John Smith or something like that, I'd just not fill out the SS# question.

Ha, Thanks guys I appreciate all the help!

Are you SURE its not NCIS, it would be a whole lot cooler....it would have a show!

No real way of telling how it will work.

I have been flagged since they started the system...due to having a high level security clearance. It always bothered me...I get delayed along with the scum.

Well, luckily for me I WAS able to get the gun first then take care of my business. I left my SSN off the sheet anyhow.

I never give my SSN on the federal gun form. It is optional and I won't risk the gun store people stealing my identity. If the feds can't identify me by my birthdate, birthplace, address and full name, then their system is no good anyway.

I never worried about putting down my SSAN. The FBI has a dossier on me anyway, so worrying about privacy is pretty pointless.

The privacy issue is not so much with the feds but with the gun store and who ever else might see the form after they file it away. You never know where those forms end up or who is looking at them.

Are you aware of the Discrete ID number you can get thru the BATFE? It's easy and if you get it, you should never get delayed ever again. all it does is allow them to research you, make a file regarding who you are and that you are approved, and then when your store calls in the NICS check, they read that ID number and if its current, you're good to go in seconds. I have two friends who have them, and after years of always being delayed, have not had one in years.

I never supply my SSN (it's optional). I love Texas, just show the dealer my CHL and the NICS is bypassed since the state has already done all of the homework up front. I'm guessing other states probably do this too.

Same as above:

In Texas show your CHL and walk out with the gun. Well, you do need to pay first.

Is this not the case in other states?

Florida

In Florida, if you have a concealed carry permit, then you can purchase and walk out with with a gun. Once the background check is completed (which only takes a few minutes), there is no record of whether or not you ACTUALLY PURCHASED anything. The call is to obtain approval, but they (the FFL) do not report what or even IF you purchased. You could have filled out the form and changed your mind, or had your credit card declined, or forgot to bring your checkbook, or any of a thousand reasons you didn't complete the purchase--or maybe you did. Only you and your FFL knows.

If you don't have a CCW, then you fill out the NICS form and it takes 5 business days before you can take delivery.
