A very open question

Hey everybody. I have a buying urge growing and I just can't think of anything good. I have an AR 16" and a FAL. I also have a very accurate Savage 10FP. These are my only rifles. I will eventually have a dedicated hunting rifle and maybe another bolt or lever gun for kicks. I was kind of in the mood for another evil black rifle but am not to interested in retracing my steps exactly. (i.e. if i were to get anothe AR it would have to be a 20" barrel or something significantly shorter like an AR pistol.)

My urges to buy are usually strong and get stronger with time until I buy something and have to pay it off the card. Getting the credit charge seems to be the only way to assuage the buying impulse:D Yeah I know, it's a sickness ;)

I was looking at the bushmaster M17. uses the same mags/caliber as the AR. has a coupla flaws from my research though.

I want somethining .308 or .223 preferably for the cost of ammo. I ain't independently wealthy ya know.

Ak seems slightly interesting but is outside of the realm of ammo. If it si really that great though tell me.

Basically I am looking for your suggestions on a new toy because i seem to be drawing a blank. I like to collect and am a decent shot. Nothing too great but I think I would pass most tests for the military right off the bat. I am in the process of getting together some shooters to hold some semi formal bench shooting contests. Most of us some form of semi auto.

Lets hear those suggestions. Open my eyes to something new or convince me of soemthing there that i just don't see.

Please and Thank You.:D

M1 Garand

How about a CMP M1 Garand? M2 ball through the CMP isn't bad money wise and is still available. The rifle is a BIG step up from a 223 and they are a very good shooting rifle. Plus the CMP program promotes Marksmanship. The cost of the rifle is low (around 5-600$) and it can be found in 308, or rebarreled in 308 if need be. Then when you add in the history behind the rifle, I think you are looking at a "MUST have" in any collection. CMP

M1A or an AK clone. Or how about a classic (i.e. 50- to 100-year old) lever action from Winchester or Marlin? You'll be the envy of your neighborhood...:)

I think you'd be making your collection "well rounded" if you went for an AK. I've got a Global Trades SSR-85b, and it's accuracy suprises me. It'll hold a 4" group from benchrest at 100yds with cheap Barnual ammunition. That's about $90/1000.

Or, if you insist on staying in your two calibers, don't forget that AK's can be had in 223 for about $350, and Hesse makes an AK action in 308 for about $600. After owning an FAL and AR though, you won't be happy with the accuracy.

Lesseeeeeeee, oh ya! Don't forget the $500 HK clones that are floating around now. Reportedly very accurate and very upgradable. That stay in the 308 catagory.

And, well, I have seen M1A's by Norinco for, IIRC, about $500 or $600. Reportedly not nearly as accurate as the Springfields, but it's a good cheap alternative.

I would suggest an HK clone as well. Then maybe an AK varient. The 7.62 ammo is alot cheaper than .223 and 308 but if you'd prefer to only have .223 and 308 caliber ammo on hand then try out an HK clone. They look a little more evil than the Garands:D

Ever considered setting up for, and learning the ropes of, hunting those really big whitetail up in Maine?

Dunno what their deal is about non-resident licenses, or if it's lease-land or open-country hunting, but the pictures of those heavy-duty deer, and the stories of the hunts, make it look very interesting.

Lessee -

In .223 SAR-3 (AK 47 in .223)
Mini - 14
A second upper for your AR - how about a 24" target barrel?
An HK rifle if you can find it.

In .308
HK G3 clone or Cetme
M1A or
an AR 10 would really make your credit card squeal!

Or you could burst out of your 2 caliber prison and go with something in 7.62x39 (SKS or AK)
or try an M-1 Carbine or the M-1 Garande, both guaranteed pleasers for vastly different reasons.

Have fun!

Just about every army in the world uses one of 3 rifles:

-AR
-AK
-FAL

You've got one, so you need the other two, right? Is that a good justification?

The FAL would meet your "cheap ammo" criteria. But so would the AK.

My AK is the rifle I enjoy shooting most.

Hey Nukem, funny thing you should say that. I just picked one up today (Mosin-Nagent M44 7.62X54) from a local sporting goods store. They had a bunch of them and some 8mm Mausers in a barrel. Went through and found the one that looked to be in the best shape. Rifling looks good, stock has a few nicks, bolt locks up tight, and has a bayonet. Everything looks original. When I got it home, I took off the stock to give everything a good cleaning and it still had cosmoline on the unexposed parts (don't know if that means anything.) Blueing looks really good except on the muzzle where the bayonet has been slid on and off. $89 for the rifle and 3 boxes of Russian ammo for $7.50 each. I'm off now to do a search on TFL to see if I can find out anything about it since this rifle and caliber are totally unfamiliar to me.

BUY A ROBINSON M96
it will put your ar to shame. it does cost as much as a preban ar
but overall function, reliability, accuracy will make you a believer
takes ar15 mags. gas adjustable like an fn. piston not gas tube operated (as are the fn's ak's daewoo's). recoil next to nothing making second shot follow up impressive.
oh yeah outside of the modular system the quick change barrel setup is great for when you want to switch between 16" and 20" barrels

Third and fourth on an M-44. I bought an un-issued one on a whim ( I was only looking for patches honest!). What a cute gun! Ammo is 5 bucks for 20, somplaces less, do not believe any russian stuff that says non-corrosive, Clean immediately after shooting! They are very cheap, well made and shooting a bolt gun fast and accurately I find to be almost as fun as my tricked out AR. Maximum fun to debt ratio, as in big bang, small buck.

You've received lots of good suggestions. I second the AK suggestion - both to help round out your collection and for shooting fun. I like the SAR-1 (7.62x39), and the Russian ammo is very cheap (about $80/1,000), but if you really want to stick with your current calibers, get the SAR model that uses .223. If you want to make it a little blacker and more evil looking, get a US made Bulgarian black plastic stock for it (K-Var I think). I have one on mine, and it makes a nice set with my 16" AR.
