A letter sent to Guns&Ammo magazine; February 2001 issue; page 7, titled
"A Confused Brit". This is a wake-up call for American firearms owners.
"I am baffled by the way that some of your readers do not practise
what
they preach, considering they tend to see themselves as defenders of
freedom
and democracy.
They get all upset when Smith&Wesson sells out to the Clinton/Reno
clan. What do they expect when you sold S&W to us Brits? Most of us
gave up
our rights to call ourselves free men over 30 years ago when the first
of the
British firearms laws were slipped through Parliament behind an
anti-crime
bill (sound familiar?).
In the UK we are not only stripped of our rights to choose and to
defend ourselves, but just like in Germany in the Thirties we are being
told
what we can read. Guns&Ammo is banned from retail sale. So is the
American
Survival Guide and Soldier of Fortune. Companies like Paladin Press UK
are
being hounded out of business by government pressure.
Being a freedom and firarm loving republican over here does not
give
one much hope for the future, and those of us who would like to get out
and
move to the US are blocked at every opportunity.
We lost our freedoms and rights because we just sat back and waited
for
someone else to put a stop to these meglomaniac politicians. We also
believed that the US would-once again-save us, or at least ship out
those of
us who preferred to align ourselves to America rather than Europe. We
talked
about it and did nothing.
You all have commented dozens of times over the years in various
publications just how pathetic we Brits are in letting our freedoms slip
away
so easily and you did nothing as the one nation who could have helped
(not
that we deserve your help). The point I am trying to make is you are
allowing the same thing to happen over there as happened over here.
You are happy to let oppressive laws be passed over in the UK
because
it does not affect you personally. You are happy to let the same laws
to be
enacted in certain states because you don't live in that state. You are
happy to let local laws be enacted to restrict gun ownership in the next
county because you don't live there. If you don't take positive action
now,
it will be your turn next.
So stop pointing out how bad it is for us poor saps over here. Go
and
put your own house in order. Then perhaps you can help the rest of us
who
really want to be free."
