A Source for 7.5X55 Ammo??

About a year ago I found, and almost bought a Schmidt-Rubin Model 1889 but was reluctant to pick it up because I was unfamiliar with the 7.5X55 round that it was chambered for.

This was not one of my smartest moves because I now find myself fascinated by this interesting line of battle rifles, alright.... it was a really boneheaded move because they’re almost becoming an obsession :)

For the uninitiated, the Model 1889 was the first model of a line of remarkably accurate Swiss battle rifles that utilized a unique "straight pull" design bolt action invented by a Herr Schmidt to fire a new copper jacketed small caliber ammunition developed by a Herr Rubin a few years earlier

As my luck would have it I've now found a source for a 1931 Model K-31 Schmidt-Rubin carbine and the "voices in my head" are screaming for me to buy one NOW!!!!:D

Anybody know of a steady source for 7.5X55 ammo? I know that Norma sells reloading supplies for this round but does anyone mass produce this cartridge here in the states?

Thank you oh great and wise gunnutz for teaching this miserable grasshopper :D

Uhm...

I'd suggest NOT shooting the 1889 rifle.

The ammo that is generally available now, either new from Norma or on the surplus market, is too powerful to be safely used with it.

The Swiss, upon changing the ammo specs to take advantage of advances in powder technology, modified many of their 1889 rifles, giving the 1889/11, at the same time brining out the 1911 variant.

As for a consistent ammo source, I don't know. I had a 1911, but sold it, stupidly.

I'm now thinking of getting one of the carbines myself.

That is exactly the thought that ran through my mind when I first found the Model 1889. Not only was I unfamilier with the 7.5X55 Cartridge, I was also afraid of what modern powders might do to the rifle and in turn anyone firing it (ME!!)

I didn't and still don't have the facility to reload yet so I took a pass on it but the K-31's should be fine with modern loads, I just had no clue where to find factory amunition for it.

Thanks again

at Empire Arms, as Mike mentioned above, stocks good reloadable (Portuguese) 7.5x55 Swiss ammo. I jsut got a batch for my 1911 Schmidt-Rubin.
