A sensitive question for the LEO's

According to C. Cramer and D. Kopel in there
book published in Oct. 17, 1994 entitled "Shall Issue: The new wave of condealed handgun permit laws"

It states that about 11% of Police shootings kill an innocent person, while about 2% of shootings by a citizen kills an innocent person.

I have great respect for these two men, but also know about all the factors involved in line of duty/police shootings vs. CCW shootings, and even that this book shows that the American public can handle CCW'S, I still think that is is somewhat unfair to the LEO community, is there a source I can consult to see current 97' or later stats on this issue?

The paper was issued thru Independence Institute, in October, of the same year.

Any current info that would help shed light on this issue would be great.

Can't help you with verification sources - but I'd comment that police and civilans (usually) operate under very differ circumstanses/mandates when it comes to the use of deadly force.

I'd also check their definition of "shooting". I.e., is it inclusive or exclusive of "accidental" shootings, etc.

I would actually be surprised if it didn't show that police shootings kill more innocent people than a citizen. By the nature of the job cops go out everyday looking for "trouble". The average LEO gets put in a situation to use deadly force a lot more than the average citizen.

It could be accurate. At least if you look at it this way:
Most of the CHL holders I know practice 2 or more times a month.
Most of the LEO's I know shoot their gun once a year for the department qualifications.

Fehh. The cops are the guys crazy enough to chase angry criminals into dark places. They can have the job with my blessing, and just like Chris, I completely understand why their error rate is what it is.

I compare it to the local coal miners. People are constantly bitching and jealous because coal miners make so much money. Simply put, I'm glad to pay whatever's on my power bill as long as I'm not the one who has to work six days a week in a friggin' hole in the ground breathing dust that's eventually going to kill me at a young age if the roof doesn't cave in first. I don't know why those guys do it for any money, but if they want to drive new cars and send their kids to college, more power to 'em.
