A Ruger GP100 or Redhawk in .45 acp?

Would the frame be big enough on a GP100? I'd take a close look at one if it ever came out. Why someone hasn't given the S&W 625 a run for its money is a mystery to me. I know Taurus has their .45 ACP Tracker, but it's only a 5-shot revolver.

Here's a thought--how about a 4-shot .45 ACP snubbie? :barf:

I'd think a 5 shot GP100 or a 6 shot RH would work. Both with a 4-5" tube.

On second thought, I guess a 5 shot GP100 wouldn't compete to well with the 625. OK.. how's about a non-fluted six shooter.

Well, they would probably require those pain-in-the-rear "full moon" or "half moon" clips for .45 ACP. No thanks.

At least with a single action revolver, you can fire semi-auto cartridges without those darn-blasted moon clips. ;)

Some time back I wrote Ruger asking for a GP in 45acp, they replied they had no plans to produce such a gun at this time.
Maybe a mail / phone call blitz from gunowners would change their minds.
They don't have an e-mail address, snail mail is

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc.
Lacey Place
Southport, CT 06490 USA

or one could call the marketing department at

Of course you could always go to the Ruger Blackhawk 45lc/45acp convertible if you don't mind single action. That is what I did and I love mine. It gives me the best of both worlds.

excuse me if im a little ignorant on this one, and dont mean to step on anyones feelings here, but why would one want a revolver in 45acp? aren't teh available 44spc/mag, 357/38/ and mongo loads all there? dont these loads cover just about everything and between? now i can see if someone didn't like the recoil of the 38/357 or the bigger ones by why not just shoot lighter loads in the standard revolver rounds? moons are just a peice (a vital peice) that can get lost, just wondering? is the pint for personal defence? if so what can a 45 do that a 357 can't?

Rob96: Thanks for the link. I would love to see Ruger make one, because I can't see spending 1K+ on one.

Tog: I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for wanting a .45 acp revolver...or not. Inherent accuracy and proven stopping power are two pluses. I simply like revolvers better than semi-aoto's- and I have about a bazillion pieces of .45 brass, bullets and reloading supplies lying around from the time I did own several semi's. I don't NEED one.. that 's for certain haha!

I looked at the Taurus Tracker .45 today and don't see one in my future. Looked at a new S&W as well. Political issues aside, it was very nice. Come on Ruger!!

not being a reloader, i didn't think about that aspect of it, and i know about the wants as opposed to the needs, just was wondering what would be the advantages of having one, dont see me ever wanting one, but times change you know

Since S&W makes the excellent, reasonably priced 625, who cares if Ruger makes it or not? Why not just buy th 625? Sheesh!

I don't want to give a lecture on the S&W deal, or start another debate...but for now I won't buy a new one because of it. Just a personal decision. But I have to admit that I've been fairly impressed with the 625's I've toyed with at the gun stores. All three I've seen had good fit and finish and decent triggers. I don't think the Taurus is in the same league.

I can respect that. It wasn't my intention to be an apologist for Smith & Wesson. Actually, I've been shooting the Redhawk in 44 mag for many years and it's one of my favorite guns. First thing I did was change out the spring and with a 3 lb trigger it is a very accurate gun. Also a very forgiving gun if you overdo it with the hot loads. One of the things I appreciate about this gun with a 7and 1/2 inch barrel is it's heavy. With 44 mag loads it helps dampen recoil. But this is just what makes it overkill in .45 ACP. You don't need the beefy cylinder walls of a Redhawk. And much as I like the trigger, it doesn't compare to the superb trigger on the Smith.

.45 ACP Redhawk..

Atticus mi amigo, you and I think alike. 7-8 years ago I wrote a letter to Ruger asking for a .45 Colt Redhawk, and I got a reply stating that the rim thickness on the .45 Colt was not suitable to the Redhawk extractor, or something like that. Looks like they got over that pretty quick....

In my mind the perfect .45 Redhawk would be a .460 Rowland, which will run with the .44 until the bullet weights get over 240 grains. These loads will kill all the dumb ol' whitetail you wana shoot with 'em. It would have fixed sights, be regulated for 230s, and have a slender 5" barrel- complimented by a round butt grip. Sort of a Speed-Six on steroids. In a REALLY perfect world it would be available in blue & walnut, but hey, I come from an era when most airplanes had propellers. Allow me my eccentricities.

I'm aware of the 625 Mountain Gun, and the fact that it can be reamed to .460. That's probably the one Smith I'd buy, except that they have successfully managed to screw even those up with sintered-metal parts and a safety. I am of the opinion that S&W don't even want my business anymore, and practically everything they have done in the past several years reinforces that notion. All you Smith-loving TFLers can buy all you want, and I won't fuss about it. They just din't make anything these days that turns my crank.

Good shootin' to you, compadres.

I'd like to see a five shot GP-100 in .45 or if that isn't possible in .44 special. The problem with the special, at least in the past, is that the ammo hasn't been as good for personnal defense as the .45 ACP loads.

Then you have these 19 ounce .44s that pull bullets by inertia with loads that would be optimum for, say, a GP-100 or steel L frame--I'm thinking of something like a 230 gr wadcutter or hollowpoint at 900 plus fps.

Moon clips.

Fastest reload possible. chamfer the charge holes, and you can "drop" in a full clip.

I like any gun that uses them.

Speedloaders can't touch them.

Buy the de-mooning tool and your ass will be pain free.

Not sure I'd lobby for the .45ACP, but given the fun I've had with a rental S&W 610 and my preference for Ruger products, I would jump at a 10mm GP-100. Now if Ruger would only add the integral scope mounts....
