I recently aquired a Remington 700 (Varmint) in .308 Win. I've put my "cheapo" scope on it until I get the good optics in.

The Varmint variety rifle comes with a heavier grade free floating barrel and is predrilled and tapped for scope mounts. Mine has an absolutely beautiful oak stock with blued metal finish.

The verdict, after sighting in with a cheap Tasco Golden Antler 3-9X 39MM scope, I grouped 3 shots at 100yds in 1/2". Not bad right out of the box, Thanks to all of you who helped me with the decisions on what rifle and calibur to get, I really enjoyed shooting this one.

I'm still thinking about the optics, I like the Leupold name but I'm looking for a mildot reticle, preferrable illuminated. Any sugestions would be appreciated!

Sure get a Leupold 6.5-20x LRT which has mil-dots but I'm not sure if it comes in illuminated. The M1 does come in both but it's a 3.5-10x. I'm not sure what power you were looking for. I got the 6.5-20 and had Premier Reticles put the Mark 4 knobs on it and I love it. Leupold is defiantely the way to go as far as I'm concerned.

Rob,

Just curious, why did you have the Mark 4 knobs put on it? I was thinking about purchasing this scope or the 8.5-25 and was wondering if there was something wrong with the knobs? Also, did the factory knobs match up with each click?

Thanks for the info

YoYo, I had them replaced because I don't like having to remove the target knob caps. With the Mark 4 knobs they are right there and they are also easier to read. The original knobs worked great with good tactile and audible clicks but they aren't for me. It's a great scope that I would highly recomend.

As far as Springfield scopes I have heard bad things and have actually seen my friends objective loosen up so much that it rocked back and forth. i wouldn't recommend them and for just a little extra you can get the Leupold with the lifetime warrenty. They are good people at Leupold to deal with also. Springfield is a little tough.

I just painted my Rem 700 VS with the Leupold 6.5-20x50 LRT with the target knob caps on. When I use the rifle in the field, I usually have the elevation cap off and the windage cap on. I just leave it off and adjust as I see fit or not at all. It never moves and it is a great system. I think Rob sums it up best when he says they are just not for him. It comes down to preference. I find the LRT standard knobs to work just fine.

Your rifle must be pretty old, as it sounds like the old BDL varmint, with the black foretip and a walnut stock. The only rifle similar to that currently made by Remington is the VLS, which is laminated, not walnut. I own a VLS in .243, but the barrel on a VLS isn't floated. I floated mine, and bedded the recoil lug and tang with Marine Tex. I then swapped the .243 action to the VS stock that my .223 VS came in, and put the .223 action in the laminated stock. The .223 seems to perform about as well in the laminated as it did in the H-S stock, but the .243 performs better in the H-S stock.

If your rifle's trigger hasn't been adjusted, then it probably should be.
