A really stupid M1 question

I feel so dumb. After about a half hour fighting with the front hand guard, I still can't get the blasted thing off. This is the one near the front of the barrel. I had to resist the urge to grab a screw drive and start prying. Does anyone want to help a moron get out of a jam?

Joe,

I assume you have removed the gas cylinder lock screw, the gas cylinder lock and the gas cylinder. If not, or if you can't do so, come back.

Once having done this, the service M1 front handguard is easily pulled forward off the barrel.

Many match rifles have the front handguard screwed or otherwise attached to the front handguard ferrule (that is the front band that is attached to the barrel behind the handguard, and into which the handguard fits). If this is the case, I do not recommend removal of the handguard, as that attachment was made for purposes of accuracy.

Jim,

Thanks. No I haven't taken off the gas cylinder assembly. All I can say is "DUH!"
