Some red dots come with the riser, no extra cost. The Aimpoint Patrol, and Lucid are among some of those. Others require a separate riser, which could run another $50-85. That cost should be included to compared "mounted" prices when considering a final cost. Like shipping, sometimes it's not the cheap price on the website you should fall for if S&H is another $25. Total price to your doorstep is more accurate - but some people deliberately like ignore that.
Generic rail risers can be had down to $10 for plastic, $19 for aluminum. It's not so much you need a riser to get over the sights, as much as needing to get the optic up to the sight line. The straight line stock of the AR puts the barrel lower when mounted to the shoulder, which is why Stoner had the carry handle sights and FSB tower as high as he did. Guns with more drop in the stock put the barrel up further toward the eye and can mount the optic directly on the barrel.
You get what you pay for, I bought a ProMag riser for $19, but it is heavier than needed because they made little effort to carve out the dead weight. It has big knobs that grab straps and pockets, and can only mount one way. Larue would be worth the money, but of course, it depends on what optic you get, which should be the primary choice first. The mount is just one small part of that decision process.
