A qustion about...

Ok folks, I’ve got a question for you. I have posed this to one of my friends and now I’ll toss it out for all to mull over.
Where do you keep your main firearms, the one(s) for home defense, personal protection? When not carrying, where do you stash them and why do you choose to keep a certain gun as a primary one? The reason I asked; I am always in search of the best place/mode to store a gun all-the-while keeping it at the ready especially at night. All of my guns (caliber wise) are capable of handling any situation short of a SAS style home invasion by an entire SEAL team. So I am not bothered about that issue, my choice of a primary gun has to do with what I am comfortable with and reliability/safety.

For instance, (I am a firearms psycho) so I have artillery strewn all about my house. I keep tucked in a drawer near my computer a SIG 228 9mm with 13 rounds of Cor-Bons. Next to my bed, on one side I have my USP Compact .40 hidden away in a stereo stand and on the other side is what I consider my primary gun, my P7M8 9mm. Under my bed is a Mossberg 12ga (Weapon of last resort) and in my closet is one of my SIG 229 .40cals (my father carries my second one). In the living room is a S&W model 19 .357 mag (hidden away discriminatingly and conveniently). Sitting in a coat closet next to the door is yet another 12ga “room broom”, and a Ruger .44 mag carbine rifle complete with 4X12 scope, for all those unorthodox types that my come calling at varied hours. I am also looking at a SIG 239 in either .40 or .357SIG to attach to my collection adding yet another piece that will need the perfect home while at rest.

I have tried various places for different guns such as under the mattress, in a drawer etc. But I still continue my search.

Needless to say, if I am ever paid an unsolicited social call by one of our fine, upstanding citizens. I am only a mere step or so away from the interloper having a Maalox moment.

Also what else do you keep at the ready along side your chosen gun? Flash light etc?

Unless you live in a remote rural area, you are just about a B&E away from a (not so) civil suit for reckless endangerment with all those loaded and unsecure firearms in your house. Get yourself a good gun safe a good dog. Both will help you (and your neighbors) sleep better. (I know paranoid schizophrenics that aren't as paranoid as you.)

I concur with Blades. buy a safe, get a good dog( www.molossermania.com/ ), and buy comfortable holsters for everyone in the house. Better to have one always on you then leave an Easter egg hunt laid out for a burglar.

I agree that he could stand to have a few ;) more firearms. However, without a safe somebody could take all of his guns to their house, then where would he be? If he's in this kind of state now, I don't know if he could survive someone else fondling his guns without his supervision.

Reckless endangerment???

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

A gun safe ehhhh…

Well I do have one, it’s called my house complete with ADT Security system, Trespassers will be killed and eaten signs no dogs, but I do have a wild panther or two roving about. You can hear’em scream late at night and early in the mornings… I love it!

Reckless endangerment? That I believe is a stretch, everyone who lives at my house is very comfortable with all the firearms and understands how to use them, safe them, load and unload them.

Do you sleep with a holstered firearm on you? Don’t make sense. As far as the ole Easter egg hunt, as much fracas as one would make entering my residence chances are they would know right away where one of the guns was! In my hand.

I agree I do need another gun! Gonna get one this weekend…

Thanks for all this “useful” feedback gents…..

Hey, if you're a paranoid gun fanatic... WELCOME to the club!

I do not think you've gone overboard, but I don't think it would HURT a BIT to look into those neat little one-gun safes to mount in your hiding places. Sure you have an ADT system, but you also sound like you live out in the boonies... how long would it take someone to get to your house if the alarm went off and you weren't home? Plus, if BG did happen to get in quietly, he may find one of your guns useful against you... just a thought.

I keep all my guns locked in a safe, except the one I carry, which gets locked up every night when it comes off, and the house pistol, which is in a really good hiding place but instantly reachable. I enjoy the company of my pistols so much, that stashing guns all around is not neccessary, because I've always got one on or within reach of me.

If I did (and I may) stash guns about the house, I would ABSOLUTELY use the instant access safe method of doing so.

Be safe!

I leave all mine, beside the one that is with me, in my safe. It's not an expensive safe (Homark 299.99 special but it is steel, very heavy, with tumbler) and it is "wedged" into position. To get that thing out, I will need to rip out the wall and a door to do so (as will the crooks). At night, I place my USP .45 full frame beside my bed but out of normal sight. I've practiced retrieving it from it's position to become comforable with my setup. In the corner of the bed (on the head rest) I've set up a sling system (with velco) for my mossberg. I've practiced "ripping" it off the frame and pumping in a round. As for all the others, they are locked up (as with the mossburg) when I am not present. I always have at least one firearm with me or on me at all times, which one depends on what I am doing that day (i.e. just sitting home veging.. my full frame USP. Car firearm is the compact USP (which is in a bolted down lock box under my seat), and carry is either the .38 or the .44 in a IWB holster or ankle holster, depending on attire (can conceal it better then the others). And lastly, due to attire (getting "dressed" up in pants that would show the ankle holster or has a tucked in shirt without the jacket) then I choose my lowly "mouse" firearms, again depending on how deep the pockets are depends on which "mouse" gun.

As for being paranoid. I had an anti (co-worker) ask me one time why I felt the need to be armed. She said that I was in a job that didn't justify carring, that I had never been a victem of crime, and that we worked in a "safe" area. Four days later, she was robbed in the parking lot. Still didn't change her mind though, she really lost it and went even more anti.

For access to my guns home defense, I have a wall-mounted telephone keypad operated gun locker which contains a shotgun, semi-automatic carbine, a pistol and a revolver. Less than 5 seconds and I'm armed.

Methinks you got that backwards... 12ga should be your FIRST choice. Far more effective at ending an engagement than a pistol... whether it's fired or not.

I keep my 590 on the shelf at the top of the closet (easy reach for me) and my SiG P226 in the nightstand. My carry piece (whatever it was I was carrying during the day) stays with me until I go to bed.

All other firearms are stored in various places, and will be relocated to the safe as soon as it shows up. [grrr]

When I'm away from home my carry piece sleeps with me (holstered, under the blankets near my knees). Ain't as comforting as the wife, but it's better than nothin'. :)
