A question on gun registration

Hello,

I'm new here and I have a question about the registration papers I had to fill out before I purchased a .12 gauge shotgun at a gun store in Georgia.

Are those papers the same as gun registration the ones politicians have been screaming about? Am I a registered gun owner? Or the papers including the instant check are just temporary and eventually trashed out?

I hope I am not registered, but I hope anyone from this board will give me some good news.

Dawg, if you filled out the yellow form, that's de facto registration. It has your name, your address, and your gun's make model type caliber and serial number. Presto: you're registered. In practice, ATF needs a warrant based on probable cause to get the info; in reality, all they have to do is threaten the dealer.

The difference is, they don't call it registration.

Oh, man! There was a yellow form! I'm history!

Perhaps I should move to a new place to avoid any traces from ATF.

I'm considering in purchasing a Glock, but I don't want to be registered. Perhaps I just drop it.

Anything wrong with being a bit paranoid?

Thanks for the tip.

"Anything wrong with being a bit paranoid?"

Nope, with this large of a population, someone somewhere is bound to be looking for you. :D

DeafDawg, welcome to TFL!

The 'yellow form' you completed is a Form 4473 - it is part of the 'background' check required of FFL's (federal firearms licensee's - i.e. licensed firearms dealers). It is, in essence, de facto registration.

However, this is not what the anti's are discussing. They want a more comprehensive system. They want to register you as a firearms owner. And, then they want to register every firearm you own, including a detailed description and serial number. It would be more 'efficient' than what they have now. Also much more expensive to maintain, and a bit handier as they decide to confiscate firearms, one category at at time.

Paranoid? Well, you're not paranoid is they're really after you. ;) In truth, there is a very long and ugly history of registration leading to eventual confiscation in many, many countries, and even in some U.S. states. For example, see www.sksbuyback.org and www.nrawinningteam.com/confiscation/calockyer.html

For the 'Million Morons' take on this, see http://www.millionmommarch.com/html/who/licensing_and_registration.html . They have big plans for you and me ...

Your 12 gauge probably won't garner much attention for you. It is a 'bird' gun to most people, and by the time they come for those, we'll probably be watching relatives travel to concentration camps.

But, your next purchases could be less obtrusive by being private party purchases. I didn't notice your state, but many (such as Arizona) still allow private citizens to buy and sell private property, such as firearms. Check your state laws to see what you can do legally.

Regards from AZ

DeafDawg:

And then there is the fact that the FBI, not the FBI of Effram Zimbalist, but the REAL FBI is, in violation of existing federal law, keeping an "audit log", central registry of approved background checks, which they aren't supposed to do.

Now then if you had violated federal law, it would be off to jail with you, if you hadn't been shot. For some "special persons" there is "special law", particularly with the likes of our present administration.

That's the form! Tradegy, isn't it? :(

I know I'll be embarrassed if I'm the only one who's a registered gunowner in this entire TFL forum. I hope that's not true.

Not a pretty sight! That would be a nightmare and insulting as well because they don't trust us with guns!

How depressing :( That's why I joined NRA not long ago so that I can at least feel part of a big family of 3.6 million members who shares my pain!

Let them arrest us 80 million gun owners and see if the anti-gun taxpayers can afford the prison expenses!!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I'll see what I can do about obtaining a Glock hanggun without getting myself registered.

Deafdawg, you aren't the only one. There are yellow forms with my name & info on 'em from here to - well, from here to there.

Don't worry too much about it. Buy some from private sales, so they will have someone else's name on them. And...Relax. As long as they're on paper in gun stores scattered all over the country, they're darn cumbersome to use to locate anything or anyone. Now, a concealed firearm permit, that's registered. Fingerprints & all.

I know I'll be embarrassed if I'm the only one who's a registered gunowner in this entire TFL forum. I hope that's not true.

Just for the record I think you will find that most if not all TFL members have completed a 4473 at one time or another. Some more than others.
TFL members, while we may not like or agree many of the rules abide by them.

Ditto Gunslinger, I always thought of the yellow form as more Buyer registration than Owner registration. I fill out the yellow form when ever I have to.
anodes.

Danger Dave & Gunslinger:

How reassuring. Thanks for enlighten me with feel of being a part of disgruntled, but mighty fine registered gunowners on this forum.

I reckon the forms are only a piece of paper and if there ever were any confiscation, there's always a fingertip away from warning others and calling a revolution right here on the internet! :D

With best regards from Georgia,
John
