i was thinking about buying a winchester defender they look really nice and i was wondering how they perform and if there have been any problems down the road with this gun my alternative would be a rem 870..

Had one since '85

I have never had any problems whatsover with mine. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in an HD shotgun.

Bought a lightly used one for my son right after Christmas. Solid and reliable. If I already didn't have an 870, I'd get another!

I have an older Defender as my HD shotgun. It's light, trim, and easy handling. I'm not sure how the bluing would hold up in the great outdoors, though. Then again it lives in the bedroom closet. I have an 870 as my deer/turkey gun.

Do It!

You wont be disappointed..I have the model 1300 and my brother has the 1200. It has taken first place in my primary HD over the handgun. Cleans up well, feels well balanced in the hands, and rugged. It has won me over to scatterguns....never thought I'd say that

Bought a Defender 1300 in '99 and have never regretted it.

It's had a total of 75 rounds through it, mostly #4, but it's had 15 of #00, 10 rounds of #000 buck, 10 rounds of #4 buck, 10 rounds of rifled slug (2 3/4 and 3").

For home defense, first round up is #4. The rest are the double-oughts.

Bill how come?

Bill why the # 4 for the first round? Dont understand the reason for it.
Oh and Rpn I think you will be very happy with 1300. The action is smooth as glass and without a doubt the fastest pumpgun you will find in its price range. But if you bird hunt I would use the same type pump as the one you hunt with. And dont forget, just because its easier to hit with doesnt mean you dont need to train with it.

i have the 1300, been great, did have to replace the whatchamacallit, the thing you actually work back and forth? having a brainfart here....

anyways, one of the arms came unfastened. i've shot the bejesus outta it though. lots of everything.

Winchester Defender

Winchester is lighter than comparable Rem 870...Aluminum vs Steel receiver. Barrels are often thinner than Remington. Most gunsmiths will not back-bore or Vang-Comp Winchester because of thinness.

Good Shotgun, good value. YMMV

Winchester shotgun

I have a model 1200 Police Stainless that I've carried on duty as a police officer for several years now and it is a superb weapon. I carry it by choice because I like the position of the safety and controls better with a pistol grip stock. I have a Bushnell Halosight on mine and shoot mainly slugs.

Hans Vang did his magic on my barrel about a 1 1/2 years ago. Very impressive with 00 buck or slugs.
