A question about the barrel on my Rem 870

I'm new to shotguns and recently purchased a 26" 12 ga. Remington Express with the parkerized finish (rough outer surface). I've put about 150 - 200 shells through it so far shooting trap - all 1 0z. #71/2 and #8. When I was cleaning it tonight I noticed what I first thought was a scratch when looking through the barrel. Upon further inspection, it looks like a very slight surface crack in the barrel about 3 inches or so in from the breech end and probably measures a little over an inch. It doesn't look any deeper than a scratch. It's not straight and it has a few little "spider legs" (best descrition I can come up with) coming off it. Is this something I should be concerned about? From everthing I've read, these things take a licking and keep on ticking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My best guess is that it is fouling or something. Try some 0000 steel wool on a bore brush and see if it doesn't go away.

I had a horrible "pit" in a barrel once and when I finally got a piece of brass in there it scraped right off :o I'd bet this "crack" will clean up with sufficient work, too.

Ruger4570 and Saands - thanks for the tips. I gave it a good cleaning, but it made no difference. It's out of the box for less than a month so I'll give Remington a call tomorrow and check out the warranty. I appreciate your responses.

Will do. I called Remington this morning and they suggested shipping the whole gun back to the Ilion, NY facility. The only downside is that they estimate 4 weeks to get it back... I guess I could always use more handgun practice. Have a good holiday and I'll let you all know how they respond.

It's back already!

I said I'd let you know how it turns out, but I didn't think it would be so soon! I just got home from work and there it was, although I was a little surprised that UPS left it leaning against my front door. I mailed it the day before Thanksgiving and have it back in one week with the barrel replaced. I must compliment Remington for their outstanding warranty service. Thanks for your help too.

Always good to hear when things workout like that! Good to hear because I got the same gun! I just got the Knoxx Spec. ops stock on mine, it works nice, the only problem I had was when I put it on I did not use loctight on the screw and the handle came lose. Tiik it back off put loctight and it works great, now my girlfriend can shoot it all day without getting a bruse! Longer you can keep them happy longer you can shoot
