A nice encounter with the Indiana State Police

I had some questions about what information came across when a person was pulled over and a license DL check was run. I have a Texas DL and the CHL info comes back in Texas, but wondered if it did should I be pulled over in other states as well, especially Illinois. I contacted the ISP to ask my question. I told the trooper I was from Texas and had a CHL. He jumps in and says, 'We sure do like your Gov around here and that CHL is good anywhere in Indiana!' Obviously we Texans are pretty happy with him too. Overall the members of the ISP seem to be very pro-Bush, pro-gun, and ANTI-CLINTON/GORE. Thought you might want to know.

Agreed. I live in Indiana as well. I have always had my questions to the State Police answered in a professional manner. In fact, I got a prompt response to an e-mail I sent to them just Sunday night.

I probably don't have to say this, but the "anywhere in Indiana" part of his statement is a broad one, and there are restrictions here just as in many other states, such as schools and posted properties.
Otherwise, Indiana seems to be a good state for CCW, and they recognize other state's permits.

Checking www.packing.org, Indiana seems to honor CHLs from a lot of states. Apparently, they are pretty liberal there. Texas where I have my permit, on the other hand, has some of the highest standards and currently only accepts CHLs from 4 other states by way of mutual agreement (AZ, LA, OK, AR). I may just have to visit Indiana someday.

We arn't Texas but we are not to bad either. Police in Indiana have a history of being Pro-Gun and not having any tolerance for the Anti's

A lot of people are bitching about them cutting back the hours of operation for NICS. But here are the facts. Police Officers do those checks. And they volonteer to do it. They need at least 6 or 7 people to do it plus a Supervisor. They have 3 right now. The officers don't get paid extra to do it and a lot of them are mad about it. The way I see it the best answer is to get a CCW permit. And this is what they are recomending as well. Get a CCW and you can skip the checks. I have heard they are cutting the time down it takes to get them while this is going on even.

Jeff, I am another pro-gun Trooper from Indiana. We sure do honor your permit, and I am going to vote for your Governor and our next president George W. Bush.

It is nice to hear someone say something other than they had a negative contact with our department.

As a retired LEO, I keep telling people that there are more good officers than bad. Nice to see this post.
Alot depends on what part of the country you are from and what city you live in.
I was a LEO in Southern California. Many of the officers in the area were extreamly scared of any non LEO with a firearm. It didn't matter what kind of person they were.
In my 14 years as an LEO I have arrested numerous people who were ccw without a permit. You would have been thankful if you lived in the area. I also let go numerous people who were CCW without a permit.
The ones I let go were good citizens who were scared. I don't blame them. They were no threat to you and me.
There is the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. If you follow the letter of the law as some do, you arrest everyone who breaks the law reguardless of the situation. The spirit of the law, you arrest only those who are a threat. You look at the circumstances before making your decision.
I feel good about the choices that I made during my time on the force.
I'm just glad that I had the choice.
America may not be what it once was, but it is still the best place on earth. Maybe we can someday get back to what it was. (yea, I'm a dreamer, but would'nt it be nice)
In any case I will do my part to make it the place it should be.

Best wishes to all! John K

P.S. I now live in Idaho--What a change of pace from California.

I was told by a LEO that when they run your plate, your CHL does not appear and in IN you dont have to informthe officer, but here in IN most of them love to chat about the hobby, so when I see a LEO I let them know and it is usually a nice conversation starter.

Hoosierboy,
Your right you dont have to tell us, but we prefer to be told than to find it or see it without any warning. I assume you are carrying if I see the permit in your wallet. I have never run into a problem with anyone who can legally carry. I guess they realize how serious the right and responsibilities are that they treat it as such.

Gopher 45. Your hotlink come up short with a bad url. Does anybody know of a link that shows which states honor other states CHL's?

I tend to travel alot and would like to know where I can and can't use my CHL.

Well, I live in VT (yeah, I know), and despite having some very cool laws here regarding CCW, I have the dilemna of wondering if there is any other state who would recognize the right of a Vermonter to carry.

Anybody have any info on this two-edged sword?

IIRC the Supreme Court already addressed this issue. The states cannot be forced to do the Brady background checks as it would be an unfunded federal mandate. If the cops don't want to do them then they don't have to.

I remember that decision, but I don't understand. How is it possible that the states are not responsible for carrying out the checks, and neither is the federal government, but the purchaser is still responsible for making sure they've performed the check before he can legally own the firearm?

Nice to meet you tlhelmer, cyberly speaking of course. It was Trooper Lane at ISP that I spoke with. I have had nothing but good experiences will state troopers in all states that I have met. Now I have never met a N.J. state trooper before and from what I have heard I don't really care to.

I had checked packing.org last December before accepting the contract here, it is the main reason why I didn't choose the Attorney Generals Office in Topeka, Ks as a matter of fact. I called the AG office here to verify the info and when I arrived I contacted both the Indianapolis PD and Marion County Sheriffs Dept to see if notification was preferred although it was not required. Both told me, as well as Trooper Lane, that it would be appreciated so I am more than happy to accomodate. Doesn't bother me at all. I want LEO's on our side (especially MY side) and anything that I can do to promote good will is a big plus IMHO.

tlhelmer, might meet you in person someday, I just hope you don't have the lights turned on when we do. ;-) In fact I am going to be blasting west on I-70 Friday afternoon, so tell your buddies out that way to just ignore that speeding car with Texas plates. Texas is so big we all have to drive fast just to get anywhere and it tends to carry over to other states.
