A New Way of Seeing Things

While this may be old hat to many of you, I came to a new way of seeing things today. Let me preface this by saying that I began by believing that the 2nd Amendment guaranteed my right to bear arms. In time, I came to believe that the right to bear arms was an inherent right and that the 2nd Amendment was merely an acknowledgment of this right.

Recently I came to also see that the Constitution and Bill of Rights were essentially a covenant between our government and its citizens. This covenant can not be broken unless the union between the citizens and the government is broken or amended. Keep in mind, that the government is not an entity in and of itself, it should have no say in this amended covenant. The people must decide upon amendment of this covenant.

Today, while having lunch with the family after going shooting, I believe I have reached my final destination in this search for the truth. I got into a political discussion regarding guns with my oldest son, age 14, who has recently become a rabid conservative. While having this discussion, I suddenly came to a new realization regarding the 2nd Amendment. This amendment neither guarantees our right to possess arms, nor acknowledges it (although it does both implicitly). Rather this amendment guarantees that the government will not infringe on my right to possess arms. It was like someone flipped a switch. Again while this is old news to many of you, it was delightful to share this with my son, and I wanted to pass along the growing experience.

By the way, a good time at the range was had by all and today was the first day by boys, 12 and 14, shot the almighty .45 ACP :)

ONewman, the Bill of Rights outlines what the government _cannot_ do. Unfortunately, our government violates the Bill of Rights every day in many ways, and does so because the people do not protest (much). It is frustrating that cases such as Emerson, in which someone did protest against government violations of the Bill of Rights, will take years to be heard by the Supreme Court.

You're helping to preserve our Bill of Rights, though, by teaching your kids to shoot, and teaching them to think. Congratulations.

Dick
