A new Taurus PT111 G2 at the range

I picked up a new PT111 G2 yesterday, took it home, field stripped it, got the excess oil off of it ( there was plenty of it), and put it up overnight with the slide locked back, with the two magazines loaded up. This gun has some stout springs so I thought I'd break them in a bit before shooting. The gun cost $200 + $38 s/h ffl. It has pretty good reviews, but I wasn't expecting much.

I went to the range and ran 200 rounds through it: 50 Blazer brass 124 G; 50 Freedom reloads 124 G; 100 Remington 115 G - all RN.

No stoppages or problems of any kind. I do the same kind of target shooting with all my 9 mms, so I can say that I can hit with this sub-medium 9mm about as well as I can with my medium size G19g3 and my CZp01 - both of which cost twice + as much.

Since this model is something of a knock off of a Glock, I'll mention that the ejected cartridges went 7 to 8 feet to my 5 o'clock- none of them went in my face as Glocks are occasionally known to do.

I bought this thing more or less on impulse which is something that I very rarely do - but in this case I'm glad I did.

I purchased mine in January and I love it. It's a little too heavy and bulky to cc so I went out and bought a Diamondback DB380 for cc. I have about 500 rounds through the Taurus with no problems. I know there are a lot Taurus haters out there but this is a great little pistol for under $250.

They used to have a bad rep for quality control but from everything I have seen, read, and heard from my local gun shops/shows taurus is now as good as any other brand out there.

I would not say that are as good as others but they are trying to improve their image. The Pt111 is a good gun for its price point, the only complaint I hear is the long trigger pull.

How does it compare L W H grip size to CZ-82

Sounds like a great gun. Let a family member ck out my 82, but I think they like lighter weight, maybe a grip more like a 1911. I was hoping to find something with a decocker, since pistol is SA/DA. The DA pull is longer of course than SA. It it normal for DA? Much more important, how is the reset? Some SA/DA resets are so long, it could be easy to Short stroke like some do a pump shotgun.
What of shooter operated real safetys (something other than "release " just in front of trigger as in Glock). You said the 111 is a lot like a Glock. But doesn't pulling the trigger after a FTF, on DA , actually recock without having to pull the slide back. Maybe they do now, but thought with a Glock, if you get a FTFire, you have to run the slide back to recock.
Might have this wrong. Haven't fired a Glock in a while. Thanks. Pat

The pt111G2 trigger has a 1/2" light takeup in SA, which is appx. twice what my czp01 and G19g3 have. I think the DA is only there if you have a primer that doesn't fire, then you can go DA and see if it will fire on a subsequent hit.

The reset is good - I have a Neos 22 that once in while does mess me up on reset - the pt111 didn't.

I think of the long SA takeup as a kind of safety feature, it's easy to adapt to and it didn't mess up my shooting. It has a safety, which I doubt I'll use, and it has a loaded chamber indicator, which I like. The problem with a loaded indicator, is that if it ever fails showing "empty" when loaded (I had a gun do that), it can be dangerous while you're in the habit of believing it.

My little Taurus PT111 G2 has been a good gun so far---had it for like 6 months now.

I bought it mainly for something different--the low entrance price and good reports on the net.

My Taurus 605 revolver has also been good---bought around the same time as the PT.

I'm no big Taurus fan but these have been good guns---I'd also report any problems but there hasn't been any.

I can't speak to the PT111, but I really like my PT809. I had some Failure to Fire rounds early on with it, but I found out there was assembly grease in the firing pin chamber. Once I cleaned out the firing pin tunnel, my 809 has performed flawless. It's not as smooth as my CZ 75 or Sig 229, but for the price point, I'm really happy with it.

Taurus really packs a ton of grease in these firearms when they are assembled. I would advise anyone purchasing a Taurus to give it a thorough cleaning upon purchase. One the packing grease is removed, these are pretty decent firearms (at least in my experience).

Glad yours is working out. Have fun with it. :D

I have no where near 1/2" takeup, 1/4" max in SA.

I hate Taurus almost as bad as I hate glocks....that being said, I carry my G2 5,6, or 7 days a week.

It works, it's accurate, it's not much thicker than my Shield. I need to buy a couple more magazines.

I'm right there with you, Ritepath. I own exactly 1 polymer frame gun. The PT111 G2 and it goes every where with me. It really is a great little gun. Fits in my back pocket since I ground down the pinky finger extension on the mag. I guess that says something.:)
